The first Hem in the effort of ;i community to secure good ;
schools is to find teachers whose iiersoiiality and training is such:
as to fit them for this work. j
There are some communities that spend large amounts perj
capita for their .schools,. yet which fail to get the results they nrej
entitled to. In some cases too much money is put lr.to oinamenuu
Luildinj-'s and not enough into .securing teachers who are thor
oughly trained for their work. In some sections the state fails
to provide adequate facilities for the training of teachers.
Th" human rue has heen trying for liOOO years to develop
the best method of imparling knowledge. Teachers need prepara
tion in special professional schools, which shall show them what
experts regard as the most efficient ways of conveying informa
tion to young people and arousing their mental abilities. Other
things being anywhere near filial, the school system that has
the best trained teachers will produce the best results.
Hut the personality of the teacher is a force almost equal to!
training. Some teachers will make the lesson subject seem as
dry as a bone. Others have a contagious enthusiasm, and can
make any line of work seem interesting. Some teachers have a
lovable quality that makes pupils wining to work to gain their
approval.
It takes a keen judgment of human nature for school authori
ties to meet applicants for teaching positions and pick out those j
who have the best qualifications. Letters of recommendation are:
;.pt to he flattering and complimentary. Many bright and clever
young women go to pieces under the strain of a class room, and
their school accomplishes little. I Jut many quiet and reserved
teachers have a silent charm that wins the hearts of their pupils,
while their good-natured but firm authority makes the youngsters
realize that their work must be done.

GOOD EVENING FOLKS
Alas, 'tit saa
But TRUE
Strange thinga do occur.
And it happened Caturday '
Afternoon at 4 p. m.
And it wa awfully hot
The tun was Just sizzling
But it had to be done.
Paator Hilton was on the job
All alikered up
And rarin' to go.
And there were others
About two of 'em
On the firing line
Ready to face
The mustard cat
And listen to those words:
"Let no man put asunder"
Then the groom began to wonder
What he had done
With the wedding ring
His ded bought the day before.
After a shprt Intermission .
The old man came through
And tho fireworks began.
Prune Pickin s planted
An ugly kiss on the very lips
Of his beautiful bride
Slipped the sky pilot
The usual fee and
The two newly weds hopped
Into a waiting flivver
Without a chauffeur
With a little gas
And plenty of oil.
Made a slight detour
Through the city
And were last heard from
Hanging out
Of a top story window
Of a Portland sky-scrapper
Looking down
On the angry mob.
It is not expected that
This colomn
Will be up
To the standard
For the next few weeks
But here's hoping.
