Every grower would do well to clean up the broccoli plants as they come from the seed bed before planting in the field. Plants infested with aphids or root maggots will fail to grow properly. If they grow at all. The treatment which will give the best results is rapid und economical. After the plants are trimmed ready for replanting, dip the entire plant, -oots as well as top in a solution or Blackleaf 40. This is made tip in small quantities as follows: One table spoonful of Blackleaf to each gallon of water. Also add a small amount of soap as a spreader. The soap is of great advantage upon a plant which has a glucous Burface as does the broccoli plant. The root treatment will kill the small root maggot which works on the roots and stems of the plants. A large amount of damage was caus ed in some fields last year by these insect pests.
