Mr. Ross was born In Scotland
on October 12. 184B, and came to
the Itntted States about 55 years
ago. movtnsr to Salem five years
later where he has since resided. He
was married to the daughter of the
iate Iks Dtirbin. nn uncle of Frank
Daibln of this city. Mrs. Ross died
a number of year ago.
Mr. Ross also served at the peni
tentiary as a guard for some time
being one of the guards who were
overpowered in the famous Miller
and Tracy escape. It was during
this egcape that B bullet grazed ths
top of the bead of Mr. Ross. One
of tb guards standing: beside Mr.
Ross was shot and instantiy killed
by the desperadoes and when his
partner fell, .Mr. Ross also fell and
remained there until the bandits bad
made good their escape. With the
guns having iicen fnken from thcro
by the bandit it would have been
useless to have Blond against them.
It is thought tiisf the quick thotiRht
of Mr. Robs In falling to the ground,
when his partner was shot was the
thing that saved his life.
