HOUSEHOLD BUDGETS
Household economists are urging people to ado)t household
budgets and banks and similar institutions give our account
books prepared so that people caii apportion their expenditures
after some standard plan. While many people kick the persist
ants to carry out sucli a scheme, those that do arrange a good
system for home aud personal expenditure are laying the foun
dation of savings and business success. Young people just be
ginning wedded life do well to study expenses with conscientious
thoroughness. Many matrimonial ventures have been wrecked
on poor home finance. Such folks might have money enough
for a modest start. But their usual plan was to spend their
income as fast as they got it. When special needs came along,
they had not planned for them, and were in difficulties at once
Love often flies out of the window when the purse is empty.
A married couple ought to study some of the many works issued
on family budgeting, and get an idea of what the experts think
is a normal division of income among the various classes of ex
penditure. Then if they find they are spending too much rela
tively on food, or clothing or rent or incidentals, they can study
that particular' item and see if it can not be reduced. The fam
ily budget idea implies that people will take the time necessary
to keep a faithful account of expenses. This habit is a splendid
.business training, and it encourages ' methodical ways. Most
people who have kept accounts regularly become able when they
get the totals of their various lines of disbursement, to see that
in this or that direction, their costs are too much for their in
come. ' A sensible person should find little satisfaction in con
tinuing a line of expenditure which is extravagant and beyond

Advertising is the means of influencing the buyer to the
point where he will want the very thing that you have to sell
him. He may not have thought of the matter at all but judici
ous advertising creates a desire in the public mind for the com
modity or thing you have, so you go about the work of putting
the proposition in its attractive light before the buyer, who im
mediately accepts the suggestion created in his mind by your ad
vertising, and the more persistently you advertise the goods the
greater the longing established in the public mind to possess and
use that product. .At first the buyer may pass the matter lightly
by. The second time he hesitates a moment. The third time,
perhaps, he gives it a second thought, and turns back to again
read what you have to say. He likes tho way you express the
worth and necessity of the article, and decides that it will be to
his advantage to ossess it. So he goes down and buys. On the
other hand, many persons buy on tho strength of your first sug
gestion. There is also a class who are not atfected, but those
people are in the minority. Busy men and women read their
papers, and wide awake merchants and manufacturers know it,
so for that reason the daily papers have become the channel
through which the.it; sellers approach buyers, knowing by experi
ence that it is the quickest and least expensive way of reaching
the ultimate consumer.

The last year has seen a great number of boys going in for
experiments with radio apparatus, and hundreds of thousands
of them have become amateur wireless fans. Secretary of the
Navy Denby has issued a statement commending these young
experimenters, and he believes that such activities incite a boy's
ambition and would make him more useful in case of national
emergency. Anything that makes a boy use his brain is help-'
ful. Formerly millions of boys used to spend their spare hours
loafing on curbstones and at local hang-outs. They stood with
open mouths, watching older or more active people do things.
Today llic typical boy finds such inactive life uninteresting. He
wants to do something witli his own hands. The boy who has
done something with wireless work has gained a new idea of his
own power, lie will not be content to take hold of his life
work in a routine way and do it just the same as the man before
him did.. He will want to think out better ways ol'doing tilings,
and that spirit in the nation at large will improve living condi
tions for everybody.

forces that operate in and around New York City when a cargo

Krause, a character well known In
