that w e cease to reward them as any
thing more than an incident to the
landscape, when in very fact they
make for us a wilderness puradise.
There Is no day in the year that
we have not some out of door -sport
to enjoy. In midwinter really, what
do we know of winter, come to think
of it? We have duck hunting and
salmon trout fishing. Spring brings
ua the Koyal Chinook, king ot game

the Hod and Gun Club or you can
scan up a pinochle set at a pinch.

Really, when you stop and think,
where can you beat it?
The Lord has surely directed our
feet into pleasant paths; and then we
have gone one better and widened
those paths into flivver roads iliat

land in a half day at the most At any
point along our paved I'acifio High
way or our railroad, we can turn to
right or left and in half a day be in the
tall wilderness. And it isn't a man
made wilderness, either: it's the pure
quill, and it doesn't take you long to
begin to see things with red eyes all
aroundi you.
City folks pay literally millions
every year for Just a few days the like
of which we have the year around:
and once the world knows what we
have here iu little ol' Douglas some
of those millions or a part thereof will
begin to trickle hereabouts; and I'll
venture to prodlct that no seeker for
the out of doors who ever comes to
our hills but will thereafter hoard his

FRUIT INDUSTRY
(Continued from Page 17)
acreage and let some of the present
orchards die from neglect.
During the past three years many
hundred acres of orchards have been
destroyed because of their neglected
condition. They were neglected be
cause they were not profitable. They
were not profitable because they were
planted on hind not adapted to fruit
growing or because wrong varieties
were used, or both. Many more
acres will have to be romeved for the
same reasons.
Grape growing is an industry that
should be encouraged. There are
many acres of rolling land not very
valuable for othor purposes that will
grow grapes very successfully. If in
the hands of proper persons this
branch of fruit growing can be made
a verv good success. A few words to
the "man behind the gun." As in nil
lines of business tho success of the
fruit growing venture depends large
ly on the man. This man need not be
a Solomon, or even a senator, but he
must have an abundance of the qual
ity that is lacking In so many of us,
known as common kense. He must be
s willing worker .and also willing to
learn.
There are r.ew problems coming tip
every day, and tho man who will not
take hold of new ideas, adapt him
self to new conditions will surely fail
Above all the man must love the bus
iness to the extent that he is willing
to live witn it day and night, in cold
in beat, in the rain and sunshine.

Oregon, in many respects, U uni
que and in class by herself. Her I
resources are varied and unexcelled '
a great State carved out of the '
wilderness by the pioneers, who '
were the cream of American man
hood; and empire builders with a vl-1
sion to see, and a will to lay. Ore-1
gon's foundations deep and broad; I
ever Inspired with a love of Justice, i
patriotism and progress. Oregon of-1
iers unexcelled opporiuniies to the ,
hustlers and home-bunders. To the
stockman she beckons and points i
to her great cuttle ranges. To the :
grain grower and farmer she says: !
Your efforts shall be rewarded as
the soil is verile and fertile." To
the fruit grower she gives a royal i
welcome and laughs with pure do-1
light as she points to the fine or-
chards with trees bending under I
their loads of lmlous fruit of all
varieties, all kinds growing to per-!
fectlon and successfully competing !
in the markets of the world w ith ull i
others. And to the berry growers I
an truck garduer an abundant re
turn is assured, as Oregon is a na
tural berry producer, the fruit grow-l
wild in many localities, and most '
delicious. To the lumberman, Bhc I
says: "You. too have a chance, and I
are welcome, as Oregon has large I
areas of fine timber and virgin for
ests." For the sportsmen and tour
ists we have lots ot game and fish i
that will delight the heart of any
lover of the great out of doors anil
afford bushels of fun for the fellow j
built that way. When it comes to
wild and changing Bcenery, Oregon
is a paradise for the nature lover.
with her evergreen mountains,
whose snow carped peaks pierce the
clouds that shroud them like a brid
al veil. Her crystal springs, streams
and lakes, with many waterfalls, are
pure and beautiful, far beyond thu
efforts ot the writer to describe.
I doubt if there is anything in
America that will equal Oregon in
scenie beauty, and especially along
the Columbia highway. Surely noth
ing can exceed it. On one side via
have r,ugged mountains decked with
all sorts of colors and blendings, an
ever changing panorama of beauty
and delight. The waterfalls that
leap from the steep cliffs with mad
impetuosity and break into foam
and sparkle like mlllons of diamonds
in the brilliant sunshine. Truly a
royal diadom.
On the other sulu ot the majestic
Columbia, which at times and places
rivals a silver torrent passing '.hru
and yet a part of an ever changing
and gorgeous landscape, far across
tho river are hills aid valleys that
lend enchantment to the view. The
scene as a whole Is sublime and in
spiring. It soeius so fresh and direct
from the hand or the Great Archi
tect and Divina I'alnter. Here the
Builder of the uulverso has surely
shown his heart. He has lavished
love and beauty and created a mas
terpiece of art.
Oregon stands out distinctively
in the matter of climate, pure water !
and healthfulness. The state has
wet, dry and intermediate zones and
everybody is welcome here anil in- (
vited to take their choice. With the ,
completion or the I'ncific Highway
next year's touriHt travel Is promts- j
lug big things, because auto owners i
can travel cheaper and stop when I
and where they please than under !
the old system of rail travel. Then i
the lateral roads lead to so many
inviting spots throughout the state, j
and travelers can go and come, visit-
ing all the beauty spots, which
means thrit Oregon will ot a large
increase in population iu the next
ten years, because when tho piblic
comes to knuw that the state is free J
from the extremes of heat and cold,
and that no severe storms are ex-1
ptrlenced here, many will want
homes in this delightful land, and ,
an excellent and inexpensive way to i
aid homo seekers and tourists to '
learn more about this state is lor
tach of us to constitute ourselves a

The question often arises, "Do girls
giggle inure often than Ikjjs?" They
do, fur the reason Unit boys do nC

nervous or hysterical origin, a condi
tion largely given over to femininity.

A Happy and Prosperous
New Year
X"E wish to express our appreciation of your confidence and
support during the past year, and hope we may deserve
them in evergrowing degree during 1923. We have made some
mistakes during the past year, and are apt to make some more
next year. But we feel that our batting average is high enough
to merit your support and patronage.
We want you to feel that this is YOUR business, for without
your support we could not stay in business and grow as the
business has grown from the start. Whenever you see anything
you think should or might be changed, do not hesitate to tell us
about it. We will not feel that you are hostile because you tell
us about it. On the contrary, we will take it as a proof of
friendly interest. , We may not agree with you but we will
appreciate your interest and help anyway. Since we began you
have honored us with over $275,000 of your business, which
we have handled as cheaply and ably as we could. We are
very proud of the confidence you have shown in this business of
yours and thank you sincerely. -
