Mellon than he bad unconsciously re
vealed to me, because of the way he
had not only tried to save me, but
I'hll, from all annoyances.
However, 1 determined that from
now on no one should try to save
anyone else from any annoyances, no
ones feelings, no ones reputation,
no ones pride should be saved at the
price of concealment.
We poor conventional people are
always Indulging In some primitive
emotion and then siiuirming and
turning "about face'' to save our
pride or to save our hitherto luimac
ulate reputations.
In pursuance with the plan which
I had formed the moment I found
out from John that the man he had
taken to the hospital was Walter
Jones I called up and made an ap
pointment with Dr. Thornton.
While 1 had been waiting for John
I had sent out to the Shore House
for Marie and she now arrived with
clean linen and another street dress.
A hot bath and a rather careful
toilet refreshed my spirits quite as
much as It rested my body and 1
found upon looking Into my mirror
that I did not seem much the worse
for my night's loss of sleep.
Hy the time I bad finished my liut
ler had telephoned to all tho places
where Tony Soper might be found
and Imd been told nt each of them
that he had not been seen there for
many day
I was also much disappointed to
find that my friend, Mrs. Walton, had
left tho city again.
I made my way to the hospital
whoro I found l)r, Thornton . I
told him the whole story, leaving
out nothing but even Including my
experience of tho night before.
Dr. Thornton could not resist tell
ing mo that ho had been afraid of
some such complications and that is
why ho had advised Sheila not to
marry.
He was surprised to know that
Walter Jones was In the city and of
fered to go to the hospital and find
out If there -was any hope that he
would again regain consciousness. Ho
demurred, however, when I told him
1 wus going Immediately to the chief
of pnllco nnd ask him If possible to
find Shelln and Tony Soper.
"You villi he sum to bring nll.sorls
of scnndal about your ears, Mrs. Wil
mington." "I am not. earing for that now,"
r asserted. "I think nnrhnnx thn nil
slio Is Innocent 1 want 1'hil lipeneer
to realise what a fool a man can be
wno believe a Jealou woman.
When I left Dr. Thornton's I went
directly to the chief of police and 1
found him much more human than
any other lesser oilicer of the law
that I bad ever met.
He seemed to think, however, that
taheiia hud gone with Tony and
slsted tliat probably Sheila, thinking
that her hurbancT wus In love with
Miss Jones, had retaliated by run
ning away with Sorer.
"Cut Chief," 1 protested, "She does
not love Tony Soper and she does
love her husband, 1 urn sure of It.
That Is why I cannot understand
It."
"llecause she loves her husband,
Mrs. Wilmington, Is the very reason
she Is bolting with Soper. She hopcB
in this to hurt her husband just as
much as he has hurt her. This Is one
of the most common cases with which
we have to deal In domestic entangle
ments. However, l will put some of
my best, men on the case Immediate
ly. "Listen carefully," he continued,
"You want to have your brother nnd
that young woman who seem deter
mined to kidnap him stopped before
they get away to Europe.
' "You want to Intercept and prove
to your brother's wife that she has
no reason for running off with a man
she does not love.
"And you want her told that If she
wil come to you all will be forgiven.
"You want to make your brother
understand that his wife has never
loved anyone but himself."
'les, I interrupted eagerly, "and
if you can r want Walter Jones to
clear Sheila from that terrible court
sentence that was passed upon her."
Iho chief of police looked at me
rather quizzically.1
"It is rather a big order, Mrs. Wil
mington, but I'll try it.
