and is said to be the longest period S
of paralysis, terminating in recovery, ; H
in the annals of surgery.
Birge was 14 whentrlcken. His
legs contracted Into the position of
one sitting. Efforts to cure him were
without result, and the case was giv
en up as hopeless. His life Itself was
linilied to the range of a wheel-chair,
l'owerlul Amis.
He did not collapse Into helpless
ness, however. Tho his lower limbs
were useless, his arms, by con
stant propelling of his chair and pull
ing himself up by anything he could
grasp, developed almost the strength
of a gorilla.
With his sister, he owns a GO-acro
farm In Vermont, producing poul
try, dairy products, fruits and bur
iies. Dirge learned to pull himself
up. hand over hand, into the seat of
a wagon and thus managed his farm
and sold his produce. It supports
them both.
Eight years ago there was on In
fantile paralysis epidemic ill Ver
mont, and when it subsided tho State
Board of Health established an after
care department. In charge of Miss
llertha K. Welslirod, of Boston. Ono
of the nurBcs visiting a boy who lived
near the Dirges heard of the neigh
boring furmer. She went to see him.
Mure to Walk.
A year ago ho was examined by Dr.
Robert Lovett, of Boston. It was de
cided there was a possibility of his
being cured if he could have the ser
vices of specialists.
On December 19, lust, Birge was
removed to the Hospital for Rup
tured nnd Crippled." Dr. Armitage
Whitman, visiting surgeon, operated
on both ankles nnd hips, straighten
ing and stretching thn legs. August
15 tho plaster cast which extends
from his feet to his shoulder bladeB,
was removed and teniporary braces
adjusted, and he will walk, the doc
tors say.
Today he grasped the metal frame
work above his bed liko a monkey
and swung his body in Its stilt mum
my-like cast out and stood on his
feet, leaning against th"e bed for
support and smiling.
"It's the first time in 39 years,", he
