PORTLAND, Aug. 20. Despite
persistent efforts of hecklers to pre
sent it, the progressive parly of Ore
gon shed its swaddling clothes yes
terday and blossomed forth as a po- '
luteal child, promising to take an
active part In future political activi
ties In the state.
Permanent' officers were In charge
of the meeting yesterday, having
been appointed at a meeting some
weeks ago. A committee empowered
to call county and state conventions.
such call to be made within ten days,
had also been appointed.
A membership list was thrown
open and about 75 of the 300 who
were present signed on the dotted
line, thus Insuring Yor themselves a
voice In the conventions to be held.
While the new progressive party
plans to Indorse candidates already
nominated for state and county offi
ces for the November election, one
exception will be made, that of the
office of state treasurer.
Norman S. Richards, state chair
man of the new party, announced
that he could not give the real rea
son why the committee had decided
to pick a man to run on tho progres
sive ticket for state treasurer, but
that within a few days all would
know.
Failure to let the folks gathered
at the meeting "In on the Becret"
did not please H. D. Wagnon and
Sanfleld Macdonald, two political
warriors, who made remarks thru
out the meeting that did not har
monize with the program outlined ''
by the committee.
"Is this state of Oregon In such a
grave plight that this organization
must pick a man to run for state
treasurer?" asked Wagnon.
"Well, one thing 1 can tell you
and that Is we want tho state treas
urer because of the control it will ;
give us on state offices through tho '
! state board of control," answered 1
Chairman Richards. .. .
VWell, I came here ready to leave
the democratic party and Join a new
party if it was an . honost lone," 1
i Wagnon said. "But why don't you
lay your cards on the table? A few
of you fellows meet In a back room
and fix up a slate and then expect
everyone to swallow It."
Chairman Richards explained at
some length that the reason for
choosing a candidate tor state
tronsurer was a personul matter that '
could not he revealed to .the public
at this time.
"You'll nil know. If you knew '
what I did you wouldn't ask that
question."
Indorsement of the compulsory 1
school bill nnd prohibition of alien
lund ownership In Oregon are two
plunks that will he inserted in tho
progressive party platform, according:
to an announcement made on the
floor by Kred U tllfford, stnte head
of the klan, one of the signers to tho
call for the meeting. His announce
ment was greeted with loud and pro
longed applause.
In opening the meeting. Chairman
Richards outlined the history of tho
progressive party, explaining that

organized throughout tho United
States with ample finances and with
a platform that would lie certain to
bring success.
"The time has come when parties
don't amount to much any more,"
he said. "The principle thnt divided
the republicans from the democrats
years ago doesn't exist any more. Our
party will place principle before of
fice and will not be like tho men
who are in public office fur gain and
enrich ment."
Aflor Chairman Richards had fully
expounded the faults of the present
parlies, reviewed the history of tho
old Hull Moose party and had ex
plnlned fully that the new parly
