An epidemic of diptheria Is gain
ing headway In the Sutherlin schools,
according to County Health Officer
Wade, who spent yesterday at the
school obtaining cultures from the
throats of the pupils to ascertain the
carriers of the disease.
; Diptheria is peculiar In the fact
that a person may carry the disease
to others and yet be perfectly well.
Dr. Wade states. In this way the
germs are carried to others while the
carrier Is not located and continues
to spread the infection. Yesterday
Dr. Wade took "smears from
throats of each of the children. In
this procedure the throat is swabbed
and the swab marked and sent to the
State Hoard of Health where a test
If made to determine the nature of
tho germs found in the throat. In
the event of diptheria germs being
found, the pupils are placed in quar
rntine. Already five cases and two
suspected carriers have been located
by this method. Dr. Wade says.
Suspects are treated with antl-dlp-therla
serum which will prevent
them taking the diseaso for a time.
