RIO DE JAN1BKO (By Mall).
The new government ftscalizatlon
laws for gambling clubs has caused
great revival In the art or risking
one's money upon the roulette wheel
or the baccarat tables.
No less than 25 clubs now are run
ning In Rio and the government's
share each week runs Into thousands
of mllrels.
The Hlsh Life" club has re-open
ed and roulette games there are said
to be unusually high.
All the regular clubs have started
roulette tables, with Americans
nmnng the beM natrons. One youth
from New Haven, said to be the son
of a millionaire manufacturer, won
7.no niilrels In a single hour's play
In a club on the Rua Sao Jose, and
his companion, an Austrian countess
of American birth, won n.OOO mllrels.
".ambling Is on the most approved
Monte Carlo style. Women of all ages
are among the greatest players, and
evening clothing Is almost essential
to got n sent at a table In any of the
better clubs. Tree coffee and drinks
are served to all players, and, strange
to say, coffee flmls far greater favor
than anv!hlng alcoholic.
Tax returns from the first week of
operation of the new fiscal laws on
rambling show that the aristocratic
Jorkev club supports the largest
pnme, the government's shnre In
from the playing In this
,.i..s airomi'ing to approximately
60,000 mllrels.
