The head of Vassar college, a woman who has been dealing with the social problems of a thousand girls a year for many years, girls from a thousand different homes, girls from all over this country and a few from other countries, ought to be able to speak as one having au thority about girls. Hur annual report, says the presi dent of the college, "does not bear out the current criticism as to detvr Inration of social standards a mo nt young women. Her statements should have great weight In reassuring those who view the Increasing laxity or social customs with alarm. It would seem entirely possible to maintain high standards at college, and It ought to be only a question of time before these standards will be ro-asserted in the social world at large." Among the Interesting things in the warden's report occurs this char acterization: "Tire present-day girl Is Indepen dent, self-reliant, restive under au thority, but at the same time reason able and willing to accept advice If tactfully approached." Albany IJnmocrat. EXCOVRAGINO SYMPTOMS. The following is authorized by the school of journalism, Oregon Uni versity and should go a long way to ward lifting the gloom from the brow of him who looks upon his editorial tasks as of no avail and un appreciated: "The library of the University of Oregon receives 95 dally and weekly newspapers of the state. These are kept on file in a special room, which Is dally crowded with students seek ing "home town" news. No works of fiction, no magazines, can compare In popularity with what the Oregon editors and reporters write. At the end of each year the papers are bound and kept permanently on file In the library.. In many instances scholars engaged In research have found these big gray volumes of great value." Banner Courier. ath county Is not large enough for the successful publication of two daily newspapers. "2. The plant and equipment of the Klamath Record Publishing com pauy la much Inferior to that of the Herald Publishing company. To suc cessfully continue In business the Klamath Record would have to pur chase machinery to an amount not less than $10,000. '3. In view of the fact that the business men of the community are already somewhat strained and are compelled to cut overhead wherever possible, two strongly competitive papers only complicated the situa tion. The revenue of a newspaper Is largely dependent upon the display advertising of local merchants." It will be noted that the first and principal reason given by the Record for suspending was that Klnmath Kalis Is not large enough to support two dally papers, and yet Klamath Falls !r much larger than Marsh field. The fact Is, the business men were weary of the economic loss of supporting two dally papers in a field fully covered by one. The same con ditions and the same situations pro duced the same result In Marshfleld. There Is neither room, business or occasion for two daily papers except to gratify peeved politicians or per sonal prejudices and these are far from business reasons. Coos Ray Times. KLAMATH FALLS DAILY TELLS WHY IT QUIT. The Klnmath Daily Record In mak ing a statement of lis policy, printed the following as the reason for sus pending publication: "The reasons for discontinuing our dally publication, are briefly stated as follows: "1. There is trouble because some of the leaders are attempting to find a way lu which taxes can be removed from the man or corporation of large means and placed on the man of small means without permitting the man of small means to know it. To date, the way has not been found. The reason there is effort to put the taxes on the masses is because taxes have to be collected from some body. If unemployment Is to be over come and normal conditions restored it Is necessary that capital that has been withdrawn from productive en terprises he returned thereto. It Is the theory of those In power at Washington that the way to get capi tal back to work is to remove the taxes on capital and permit large profits to accrue without Interference by the government. Then, the theory follows, capital will go back to work, unemployment will disappear and the United States will be back to nor mal. Oregon Jnurrr.!. ALFALFA FAILURES M.I The Willamette Valley acreage in alfalfa Is steadily Increasing. There have been many failures with this crop during past seasons, partly be cause of planting on soils not suited to alfalfa In many cases because the wrong variety was used and in some Instances because of disease. Alfalfa Is only suited to the sandy mellow, well drained soils. Grimm Is the best variety and for the Willa mette valley It Is best if the alfalfa is clipped or cut for hay late In the season so that It does not go Into the winter with a heavy green top growth. This makes a particularly valuable place for the development of stem rot. Alfalfa and clover re spond to spring applications of land plaster at about 100 pounds per acre. 4 AROUND THE TOWN Arundel, piano tunew rhone 189-L Goodyear Tire Service. Ford Garage.
