You know what you've
always wanted a cigarette to do.
Chesterfields do it.
They not only please your
taste but they do another thing
They satisfy.
They give to your smoking a
"completeness"' that is altogether
new and different.
Those fine tobaccos Turkish,
Burley and other choice Domestic
varieties are blended right.
Just right!
That's why you get "satisfy"
in Chesterfields.
And the blend can't be copied.
There's no use looking for
'satisfy" anywhere else.
Don't try it try Chesterfields.

Two Million Famine
Victims In Russia
By JOHN GRAUDENZ
Unltd press Stall Corr.pundnt.)
MOSCOW. (By 1UI1.) Dwiplt
all help coming from America, at
least 25 per cent of the children
within the famine regsm are doomed
to death.
The people who probably will die
during this wlnit-r of starvation may
be estimated at one million and a
half to two million. The percentage
of the dying will be greater the far
ther one goes Into the country, while
the children near the cities will be
easier reached through the American
relief work.
The government being aware of
this Is trying to evacuate the child
ren nearer to the cities. The mothers
don't protest if the children are
taken away from them, as they
would ratber save their children an
die themselves.
When the Volga freeies there will
be thousands dying without being
heaTd of.
This terrible outlook Is despite the
fact that soviet Russia takes all the
care possible of her children.- The
only thing they need Is wnat me
covlet cannot give them food.
All the villas and palaces of tne
former wealthy class are filled with
the nanny youngsters, with their
deep, fatalistic Russian eyes. What
ever there may be available In Russia
the wav of food. ' clothing arm
other things which make the life of
child worth while living, is given
to them. "Children first" Is the slo
gan of everyone. In Moscow there
are hundreds of children's homes.
whore the kids not only are being
fed, but also educated. All these
children are able to sing the "Inter
nationale" and other revolutionary
songs. Soviet Russia Is raising a
comunlstlc generation.
Children g homes are being estnD
II shod all over the country, even in
the smallest cities. When T visited
the city of Samara, I saw a children's
colony of about 50 houses along the
banks of the Volga, where formerly
the wealthy people spent the sum
mer. All of these children looked
happy, bright-eyed and healthy.
Even In the city of Stavropol, of
10.000 Inhabitants, there were six
children's homes, besides one hospi
tal for the children. This hospital,
however, was filled with malaria and
dlssentery patients, caused by the
lack of food. !.t American mothers
and children could only have seen
the sad, .dog-like- eyes with which the
children followed us when . they
heard we had come to Investigate
what American children could do for
them.
"Tell American children we will
never forget what they will do for us
and If we are grown up, we will per
haps thank them personally," one
child told us. The fact that there
was no tears made the situation the
more pitiful. It lies In the Russian
character to endure without com
plaining. He .Is a fatalist.

CHRISTMAS CARDS
During; tho hint season a greut
deal of die-black was In evidence In
many loganberry yards throughout
the Willamette Valley. Many ap
peals were sent to the Oregon Agri
cultural college concerning the trou
ble that special work on tho prob
lem was taken up by Dr. M. Zeller
of the experiment station.
It was first thought that the die
black was caused by the ti.iiuti or a
fungous disease. In making a tlior
eugh study of the situation nr. Zel
ler has learned that die lilac': v. us
prevalent only In those anls where
the xlnes had been allowed to re
main on the ground throughout the
winter. Where the canes had been
trained up In the fall the vines were
in a very healthy condition mid die
back was almost entirely alisent.
The contrast was very apparent in
adjoining portions of the same vard
where a part of the canes had been
tr-ilned In the full and the rest nl-

Hert-y growers who have been
