Potatoes Menaced
By Mosaic Disease
A survey of the western slates con
ducted during the past lumr.er by
pathologists of the United States De
partment of Agriculture show, that
unites adiviuate measures for the
elimination of the mosaic disease of
potatoes are taken Immediately the
work of potato seed Improvement In
(he West Will soon become pTIrnmnlv
difficult. If at-all possible. Being of
n inreciious nature, the disease is
spread in the field throughout the
summer by means of Insects which
carry it from diseased to healthy
inbius. ana is also transmitted with
the seed tubers from one generation
to another.
There is no evidence, that a Dlant
once Infected can recover and pro
duce a healthy progeny at any time.
On the contrary, the Infected plants
oruinaruy lend to a very rapid de
terioration, and under certain envir
onmental condillons practically cease
to produce tuber?, in the third or
fourth generation. If onlv a ir.
tinl weeding out of the worst casef
is practiced, the situation may be
somewhat improved, thnneh not In
all cases and by no means nerman-
ently. The mild and the medium
stages of the disease left tn the stock
serve as perpetual sources of Infec
tion, and eventually the entire strain
neromes diseased and is apt to "run
iui completely.
It has been reneatedlv demonstrat
ed in the east that the average re-
ouction or yield due to mosaic Jf
about 30 per cent. Precisely the
Mime eneci or tnis disease was not
ed In the case of all the varletler
grown In different western states.
Some remarkable Instances were ob
served during the last two years of
nein observations carried on by the
department in which the reduction ol
yield in individual hills was In direct
proportion to the severity of the in
fectlon.
The potato acreage in certain ir
rigated sections of the West has been
increased this year by one-third af
compared with that of the last vear
yet the yield in these districts Is
only two-thirds of the normal. Mam-
growers complain that where 300
sacks or more were raised to the
acre in former years, only 100 tc
150 sacks are obtainable ov. This
Is In fields under good cultural con
dltlons, showing good stands and a
high freedom from fungue and bac
terial diseases. The low yielding
quality or the strains In question no
doubt Is principally a manifestation
of nvosalc. The need of good seed
in the west is well recognized and
is growing every year, yet only
meager quantity of even relatively
good seed is obtainable.
There is very little, if any. hope of
improving badly enfected strains of
potatoes, the department speclallstf
think. Therefore, prompt effortF
should le made to locate the most
healthy strains of the various im
portant commercial varieties. Since
there is no means at present of de
tecting mosaic on the tuber the
search should be confined exclusive
ly to the fields during the growing
season. When the best strains are
found they should further be improv
ed by the annual elimination of all
the diseased Individuals.
It is necessary to place this work
'n charge of highly trained special
ists, since the Identification of cer
tain minute and pecular characters
of the disease requires a considerable
experience and a great deal of path
ological knowledge. Furthermore,
manifestations of mosaic under the
varied cultural and climatic condi
tions of the west are often very ob
scure and not vet fully understood.

ditions are about as bad down the
Volga as they are here, but the more
cstless refugees say they feel bet

still have a horse or ox which has
managed to live on parched stubble
and are dragging along behind their
ickety wagons until the time when
the faithful besets shall drop dead.
Cemeteries surroundinc the quaint
churches which line the entire course

Sad Scenes Along
the Volga River
SYZRAN. SAMARA PROVINCE,
Oct. 19. There are no boating songs
on the Volga this year.
The balalaika is not ringing from
ifc fen hosts which are floating
along this once mighty river whose
shallow waters are auoniing a poor
avenue of escape from the parched
grain fields which mook the peasants
so whom they formerly yielded abun
dant bread.
Pau-nhroknra have long since re
ceived the balalaikas In exchange for
rubles necessary to buy food tor tne
starving families.
Samovars no longer sing merrily
on the hearths of the pea-iant cot
tages. They too have been exchang
ed for bread. Together with the
family Irons and the hrlxht brass
candlesticks that once adorned every
niantleplece, they are exhibited In
the secondhand shops of villages and
cities while their former owners are
huddled together In miserable ramps
along railways and rivers waiting for
somebody to take them to a land of
food.
