Prune Packing
Is Being Pushed
In an effort to fill the early ordors
for prunes as soon as possible, the
Oregon Growers Co-operative asso
ciation Is packing In all of the prune
growing districts.
The plants at Salem, Dallas, Rid
dle. Myrtle Creek, Yamhill and Crta
wel1 are working at top speed in an
effo't to get at h ast 15 carloads this
week. The, first shipments have al
ready been made and 12 carload
have rolled up to this time. Eight
of these cars are for export to Eng
land ,hnd Canada.
Due to the car shortage caused by
the heavy movement of fruit from
the Pacific coast at this time, it Is
probable that shipments may be re
tarded, considerably and the associa
tion Is at present laboring under the
difficulty of securing cars as fast as
they are needed.

the Italian government to reduce its
Annual deficit are boarinK fruit as Is
evidenced by the recent report made
the Finance Ministry.
According to the report, the Ital
ian tax receipts for April, the last
month for which all statistics have
ln'cn compiled, were greater by 1,
200,000,000 liro (about $4S,000,
000 1 than they were In the corres
ponding month before the war. The
; pre war receipts amounted to 254,
OiiO.non. The receipts for the past
April amounted to l-4Sl.000.0on
lire.
This means a per capita rale of
about 15 lire (about $12.60) pet
year.

That the malls will continue to go
cut and be received at regular inter
vals, inspite of a nationwide rall
load strike, is the statement of Post
master li. p. Relzenstein, who Is
dally expecting the receipt of orders
to inaugurate an emergency truck
service to handle mails between the
cities of the county. It is quite prob
able that even In the event of a
strike, the railroad companies will
be able to keep sufficient trains run
ning to carry mails, but the govern
ment It la expected, will provide for
any emergencies which may arise
and will Instruct the postmasters In
the larger cities to arrange for truck
service.
It Is understood that truck com
panies In Portland and an Francisco
are already arranging for a huge
truck line to handle freight from all
points between those two cities. In
the event of a strike the trucks will
start operation at once and will pre
vent any large congestion of freight.
The fact that the Pacific highway is
paved throughout practically Its en
tire length will enable these trucks
to operate for several months, should
train traffic be held up that long.
Passenger Blage lines, would prob
ably be called upon in the event of
emergencies, to handle the malls
rind light express or freisht. As these
passenger lines are already firmly
established in practically all local
ities, emergency rules could be quick
ly adopted for the handling of gov
ernment malls and no delay need be
experienced.
It Is evident that people all over
'he country are derer.ding upon the
automobiles and auto trucks In the
event of a general tie-up of the rail
roads. In former years serious
"trlke threats resulted at once in a
disorganization of business, frenzi
ed buying of supplies and a general
hoarding provisions. It Is now real
ized, however, that the nationwide
network of Improved highways, cou
pled with the many millions of mot
or vehicles In commercial use, will
result In an organized movement of
provisions, malls, etc., so that no
great hardships will be felt as In
years when these carriers did not
exfat. .

Rand Appointed
to Supreme Bench
SALEM. Or., Oct. 19. John L.
Kand. prominent attorney of Baker,
tonight was appointed by Governor
Olcott as associate justice of the Ore
con supreme court to succeed Justice
Henry I.. Benson, who died here
arly last Sunday. It was said here
tonight that Mr. Rand will accept
the appointment.
Mr. Rand was horn October 28
1S61. at Portsmouth. N. H. He was
i-ducated In the public schools there
nnd at Smith's preparatory school,
also of Portsmouth. He also Is a
irndunte of Dartmouth college, from
which Institution he graduated in
188:1, receiving the degree of A. B.
Attorney Rand was admitted to
'he bar at Walla Walla, Wash., In
May. 1 SS 5. He came to Oregon In
July of that year and In May. U86.
was admitted to the bar In this state
where he has heen In active practice
wver since at Baker.
He was elected district attorney of
the sixth Judicial district In 1888
and 1804 nnd was elected atate sena
tor from Baker. Malheur nnd Harney
coomb s In 1002. Mr. Rand has heen
hlehly successful ns a prosecuting at
torney and prominent as a citizen.
He is a member of the board of high
er curricula, to which place he was
appointed by C.overnor Olcott.
By the appointment of Mr. Rand
the supremo court will retain two
members from eastern Oregon. Jus
tlis" Benson, at the time of his elec
tion to the supreme bench, was A
resident f Klamath Falls, which Is
in the eastern Oregon district.
