I confess I had a great curiosity
to see a real live lord. 1 bad read
so uucb about them. In the old fash
ioned novels which were tbe only
books of light literature that grand
father still kept In his library, that I
imagined a lord would be nothing
else than a Sir Qalahad, who went
about rescuing beautiful damsels
and doing other acta of nobility and
courage. .
To my surprise. I found that Lord
Ileacham, as I later learned his name
was a tall, lean, blond man of ordin
ary appearanse but with kindly eyes
and grave mouth. He looked like
any other well-bred man except that
there was something about him that
made me wonder if his compartment
bad a bath attached. In contrast to
nil the others In the diner he had
the look of a man who had Just
stepped out or his tuo.
To my unsophisticated eyes he
was no different from an untitled
American until wishing to emphasize
something, he raised a monocle to
his left eye.
I learned that there was quite a
party of Englishmen on the .train
and as Mrs, Watklns piloted me to a
table for two opposite them, I heard
them discussing polo and golf and
other English sports.
"Oh, I hope I can see a polo
game." I said to Mrs. Watklns. "Do
yon think there will be one in Los
Angeles this winter? If there Is one
thing I can do well It Is ride. Grand
father thought It was a very lady
like accomplishment but he insisted
upon me using a side saddle and an
ugly old long skirt. He never dream
ed that when Eddie Montforth and I
rode cross-country I divested myself
of the skirt and leaving it and our
saddles where we could find theni,
we raced each other for miles. I
brought my knickers with me. Mrs.
Watklns. but I left that lone skirt at
home.
"I did not dare tell Aunt Virginia
and she will be very much shocked
when she finds it. for she will know
that I could not stay anywhere very
long without getting on a horse."
Mrs. Watklns seemed disappointed
that none of the English partv took
any interest In me, until one of them.
noticing my suppressed curlosttv in
their conversation a curioiislty that
I could not hide said: "Bearham.
look at that girl over there. I'll bet
she can ride."
The color rose to his face and he
said, "Beg pardon." at which I bow
ed.
"There I knew It! I knew those
people would notice you. My dear,
you have something a kind of com
pelling personality which draws at
tention. It will either make your
success in life, or be your undoing."
"I hope It will make my success,
Mrs. Watklns. for, as I have told you,
J hope to be a great moving picture
actress."
"Did you Ihear that, Boacham?
That little girl Is a moving picture
actress, by Jove!"

By MILES W. VAUGHN,
(United Press Staff Correspondent.)
RIO DE JANEIRO. (By Mall.)
It Is benerally believed that the next
three months will witness the success
or failure of the coffee valorization
plan recently Instituted by the Bra
zilian government.
Opinion on the outcome or the gi
gantic scheme which is nothing leas
than concerning the visible coffee
supply of the. world varies. Count
Alexandre Slcillano, chief or the val
orization, committee. Is confident
that within a few weeks the Brazil
ian government will be In a position
to absolutely control the price of cof
fee In New York.
Opponents of the plan advocate
these arguments: Coffee Is sold In
Santos and Rio de Janeiro for paper
milrels, and the big New York houses
are In a position to hammer down
Brazilian exchange so that the seu-
ng price of coffee In gold or U. 8.
dollars will not vary, no matter
what the price in milrels.

Outlining the position of the gov
ernment In a speech at Santos, Presi
dent Epltaclo Pessoa said:
"The valorization of coffee Is not a
problem for the sta:e of Soa Paulo
(the great coffee raising state)
alone, but for the nation, because
coffee constitutes our greatest source
of national Income."
The President reralls the silk val
orization scheme of Japan, and other
similar plans, declaring that no mat
ter what the success or failure of
these hsve been. Drazll Is bound to
win out In her present plan, because:
"We produce 75 per cent of the
world's coffee, and when a nation
thus dominates the market for a ne
cesslty like coffee, she can be certain
of dominating the price."
The president said the coffee crop
for the season 1921-1922 is estl
mated at 15,000.000 bags, and that
a shortage is bound to result since
consumption for the year 1919-20
was 18.499.000 bans, and that con
sumption during the current year
shows a tendency to exceed even mat
figure. Prohibition haa caused a
great Increase In coffee consump
tion In the United States, the presi
dent declared.

Buffalo Bill's Quick Wit
Col. William F. Cody, while travel
ing In Europe In 18!t with his Wild
West show, was on quite Intimate
terms with royalty. On Iluffalo Bill's
advent Into Berlin Emperor William
was entertaining three kings of small
er German powers. One feature of the
Wild West performance was the ex
hibition of an antiquated Deadwood
cna h, containing passengers who were
attacked by Indians and rescued by
cowboys. The kaiser asked that be
and his guests be allowed to tide In
this vehicle during a performance,
and of course the request was granted.
After the usual attack and rescue the
emperor remarked :
"Colonel Cody. 1 don't suppose this
Is the first time that you have held
four kings?"
"No, your majesty," replied, the
scout, "you are right, but It Is the first
occasion that I ever held four kings
and the royal joker at the same time."
