One New Yorker, at least, has faith
In her fellow-beings and to date this
faith has been justified. She is in
clined to carelessness and is never
sure of bringing home all of the
possessions with which she starts
out. So one the inside of a fur
neckpiece which she wears most of
the time, she has stitched a tape In
delibly printed with her name and
address. "Three times I have left
that scarfs on subways or ln hotels,"
she says, "and three times it has
been returned to me, twice by mall
and once in person. You can't tell
me that people aren't honest." She
admits that it Is neither a very val
uble nor a very beautiful scarf but
Insists that has no bearing on the
case; that a lot of peoplo have none
at all.
.
The most exciting swimming con
test ever staged in New York was
undoubtedly the one at the Madison
Square Garden the other night, when
Joseph P. Cawthnrn, who Is usually
as successful a fisherman as he Is
comedian, endeavored to "land"
Miss Mille Gade, champion swimmer
of Denmark. Cawthorn was armed
with a trout reel, a split bamboo rod,
and a line of unsual strength. The
line was fastened to the swimmer's
belt and then the tug was on. Twice
Miss Oade won and then In the third
and last contest, Cawthorn landed
her.
NEW YORK. Sept. 2S Elinor
Olyn is ln our city once more, after
a- summer In the Pacific coast mo
tion picture colony. She declares
that In spite of sensational stories
about the whole colony, they are
really quiet, domestic, sweet, and
wholesome, taken as a group. It is
a rejuvenated and changed Elinor
Olyn who has returned. The British
austerity with which she greeted re
porters when she first arrived here
is jrnne. stnnr with the nlcturennue-'
ness which we had associated with
her. She is tailor-made and girlish
now and laughs attractively, inter
spersing her speech with American
slang with complete lack of self-
consciousness.
"Camllle" with bobbed hair! It
Isn't quite expected, is it? But she's
here. That was the outstanding sen
sation of the private showing of the
film of Nazimova in "La Dame aux
Camelias" the other night at the
Rltz. The Russian actress has come
to the bob and she carries it with her
Into her roles, whatever they may
be. It seems something like putting
Hamlet in frock-coated funeral garb.

"The White-Headed Boy" given
by the Irish Players has had one of
the big receptions of the season to
date. Charles Dillingham Is pre
senting it at the Henry Miller the
ater, but the Players have superin
tended the production so that It Is
truly their own. It Is the happiest
comedy they have given in years,
and will accordingly be the most
popular without a doubt. Several of
the actors are in the company whom
we1 learned to know In their previous
productions here, Arthur Sinclair, J.
A. O'Rourke and Maire O'Neill, be
ing particularly well remembered.

All first week registration records

further a general "pick up'' ln the
retail trade. Furs are going well
again and a generally busy winter
and spring seems forecasted.
This Is another matter of psy
chology and value. Those who know
absolutely about such matters are
authority for the statement that
hardly one New York woman, re
gardlesi of her wealth and position,
wears real pearls to the opera un
less she Is celebrating a special oc
casion. Nor does she wear them to
large parties. "What Is the use of
having them?" one society woman
was asked the other day when the
subject came up. "Oh, you don't
have that 'guiltiest feeling' about
wearing Imitations If you know the
apparent duplicates of them, only
real, are safely reposing In your
safety vault," she explained.
