Did Alexandra Flowerton break
her engagement to Lieutenant Kloor
because her sister, Consuela, of the
Zlegfeld Follies, fell in love with
him when he returned from the wilds
of Canada last winter? Authorities
are saying "Maybe." It was given
out a few days ago by the family that
the engagement waa on; that a good
friendship had been mistaken by
Alexandra for love because of those
days when no one knew whether the
navy aeronauts would return or not;
that It was romance artificially
stimulated by danger. Some others
who are pretty close to Miss Flower-
ton said that it was simply that they
bnd decided it was Impracticable to
try to live on a navy lieutenant's sal
ary. Now comes the other Miss
Flowerton and says that as for her a
navy lieutenant s salary is quite all
right and that she herself Is consider
ing proving It. She doesn't say it is
Lieutenant Kloor she has In mind,
but her friends do say so; and that
such is she real secret of it all.
The cleverness of a political
speaker doenn't all show in his
speaking. Two men alighted near
Broadway and Thirty-eighth Btreet
the other day and began diligently
searching for something near the
enrb. . They said nothing to each
other, hut searched so arduously that
passcrsby wanted to help. "Whaddye
lookln' fer, gents," one boy demand'
ed. The men continued their quext
without replying. Soon the crowd
had swelled rapidly. Then when It
threatened to interfere with the
traffic, one of the searchers mount
ed a box near the curb and began
brightly: "Ladles and gentlemen, I
know that you are all deeply con
cerned with the approaching elec
tions " .

Writsr Call Attention to Tholr Vast
Services In Staying th Ravage
of Insects.
Be 'is tu sportsuiun, and a vandal
sort of butcher, who shoots the
small birds, which no stretch of in
genuity can bring within the definition
of frame. ,
In some European countries such
shooting Is termed sport, and some lin
nilgrntita time brought the bad habit
Willi them. All hunters and sports
men should dliicnuruge, or wheu !oa
sible, without resorting to too severe
measures, put a stop to such butchery.
And that uot simply because we ought
to, and sensible folk do like to heur
and see the little thlnpg about, but
also becaiiKe of the actual benefits
they confer upon mankind.
Mlehelet. the French uaturallst and
historian, suys lu bis "Insect Life"
that If all the birds were destroyed
man could not live on earth more than
nine years. He believed that without
birds to check the ravages of inxecls.
the insects would first destroy the
growing crops of grain, next the grass
and the foliage, which would leave
nothing ou which to feed cuttle, hogs,
sheep or poultry. The crops having
leen destroyed, all domestic animals
would perish for want of food, and
man lu his extremity, In a barren and
desolate world, would be driven to Hie
necessity of living entirely on fish.
When Ihe supply of flsh was exhausted
he would starve. Montreal Family

Lack Dramas In Verse,

THE
U. S. NOBBY TREAD
Whtrt th going specially heavy
with snow, mud or tand, in hilly
country where maximum traction on
the road is a factor, no other tire tread
yet devised is quite so effective, or so
wholly approved by motoring opin

Its very simplicity three rows of

Most likely you'll hear an inter

Finally U. S. Tires. And U. S.
Tires ever since.
Perhaps it's the experience of U. S.
Tire buyers that makes them, more em
phatic in their preference than ever this
year.
When these men have tried most
everything by the way of "staggering
bargains", "hurrah discounts", "discon
tinued lines at less" and so forth they
know what not to get.
They want a fresh, live tire. With a
good reputation. That's everything it says
it is. With the people behind it who
back it up.

Bustless steel seems to be a com

be looked Into for employment ln
various industries, according to the
Compressed Air Magasine (New York).
Savs this publication: "It Is reported
on German authority that the Krupp
works are paying special attention to
the nroductlon of such steel. The
metal contains large amount of
chrome and Is said to be remarkable
fnr its hardness and strength. Its
resistance to chemical actloti Is such
that it Is not affected by boiling In
nitric add. It Is used as a substitute
for nickel-plated metal in the manu
