HOW PEOPLE PICK THEIR BANKS.
How many bank customers ere influenced largely by the man
, ner of the man at tha window? And just what does make a person
select one bank rather than another? remarks a writer in The Na-
,' tion's Business. ;
Nearly everybody, even the humblest of us, sooner or later
has dealings with a bank. Many probably go to a particular bank
without knowing why.. But even when one doesn't know th
reason, there nevertheless is a reason. It may be because a bank
is so accessible that it represents the line of least resistance. The
bank building itself may look so substantial and impressive that
the innocent bystander feels a sense of security in dealing there.
Or, without recalling where or how, a man may have in the back
of his head the vague memory of favorable comments about a
bank from certain of its customers.
Of all who answered the inquiries in a recent investigation
of this question, 23 per cent, or nearly one-fourth, said that they
were directed to their bank by friends. An Ohio bank in its circu
Iar goes much further and says that 60 per cent of their new busi
ness last year originated directly or indirectly from its older de
positors. Newcomers in a city are, of course, especially suscep
tible to the guidance of friends i i making a bank selection.
According to reports emanating from Washington the country
is all "fussed up" things, generally are in a state of unrest and
the administration is having a terrible time "getting down to
earth. Big business heads of the nation are being called into
consultation quick action is necessary it is demanded in order
to shape the business world in a proper course and iron out some
of the wrinkles. Prognosticatoi s, who some ten months ago, re
marked that "things would be practically .normal in a few
months," missed their mark, goodness knows how many months.
The ordinary private business concern could not adjust its affairs
from a pre-war basis to normal in the time allotted by some "great
minds," much less the entire world. The edict was a delusion. It
was the utterings of false prophets. We are now beginning to
realize that sand was applied to the skids under national business,
instead or grease.
