A Woman Who Wouldn't Remarry

DAY,
Larry's Devotion.
"The shops will be closed by this
time," said Bart in answer to Larry's
request to find a shop where be could
rent a typewriter. .
"You'll have to get up early then,
Larry. You and Alix are to play ten
nis at 10 o'clock," said Bab.
"All games and Dels are off. We
will be playing the typewriter at thai
time," grinned Larry.
"Alix has engaged me as her secre
tary. We are going to work four
hours daily thl summer," and Larry's
eyes twinkled.
'That is news," emphasized Bab
her eyes two interrogation points.
"And may I ask just what you are
going to do, Larry, and how much you
expect to be paid for It?"
Larry can play a typewriter bet
ter than be can a piano, Bab which
is going some," commented Bart.
"Contributing to the success of a
genius will be reward enough," an
swered Larry.
'If I thought this literary partner
ship was going to last I'd feel obliged
for the good of the football team, to
get you away from here. I didn't
bring you home with me, Larry, to
keep you cooped up pounding a typo
writer this summer. We've got to
get In condition for football this fall."
"I'll be there harder than nails,"
smiled Larry, amused at Bart'a vehe
mence. "Tennis, hikes, rowing I am
going to help Alix mix exercise with
mental effort."
"Mental effort, bosh!" said Bart,
with the assurance of youth which as
sociates effort only wltk, masculine
exertion. "If you aiik me what I think
of the story that magazine bought, I'll
tell you It was drivel. I don't take
much to this analyzing every emotion,
and every impulse a person has. But
if Alix can find anyone to give her
three-figured checks for her stories I
am reconciled," and Bart had the good
grace to grin.
"Nice sort of a companion Bart's
going to be, for the woman he mar
ries," said Bub.
"Why not?" demanded Bart, "I
am going to give the woman I lnarry
a nice home, plenty of money, and
gratify most of her wishes. We are
going to live and love without asking
the why's and the wherefor's."
"My hero in Her Marriage' was
that type of man, if you will remem
ber, Bart. But why talk about the
things that go in books just now,
with all this beautiful country before
us. Anyone with a modicum of brain
and a little patience can write a story
but it takes the ban of Nature and
fhe creative power of God to form
the ros- bush climbing over that cot
tage yonder. I love roses. If I had
the money I would have them about
me all the time."
"You should live in California
then," said Larry. "There you Sep
literally miles of rose hedges. And
the bungalows In April are veritable
bowers of crimson and blush and
faint creamy yellow and white."
"Sometimes," I answered him.
have thought that I would like to live
there If it is that land ot blue sky
and sunshine that everyone ravef
about. I believe, with Olive Schrein-
er, that there can be nothing like de
spair ln the world as long an there
are sunshiny afternoon. -
"I wonder If you two mooning peo
ple would deign to aiUbt from this
machine and eat dinner. ..with us,"
is railed Bart as be drew up In front ol
the club house.
"Of course we will and thank you
for It. Our capacity for enjoying the
good things of life are enormous,
Bart," and Larry paused to let that
thought sink home. ' Tben be added,
'Alix and I appreciate rosea and sun
shine but we also appreciate good
food. The wider one's range ot ap
preciation of-Jife's offering the more
one reall Uvea,
The thought again passed through
my mind that Larry wan mature be
yond his years.
"Do you regard food as an emo
tion?" said- Bart cynically.
"No. I regard it as -an appeal to
the aense ot taste Just as sunshine
and roses appeal to the senses of
sight and feeling, and through these
senses to one's love of the beauti
ful." "You're hopeless, Larry. I am go
ing to black-ball you as captain of
the football team this fall. I'll do il
reluctantly, but I'll bave to do it for
if you bask in Alix's brand of senti
mentality all summer, you won't be
fit for a position that only a he-man
can fill."
'Cease thy worries, Bart dear," said
Bab sweetly, "This little summer's
play Is not going to harm Larry for
any purely masculine diversion."
What do you mean by that?" I
asked Bab quickly.
I am as opposed to explanations
as Bart Is to analysis," countered Bab
mysteriously.
Smell that coffee." said Bart. "I
am going to have a planked steak. I
am as hungry as a bear. Listening to
conversation of thla kind always
whets my appetite. It sort of gives
me a hollow feeling that nothing can
remove but food." .
And a good dinner always helps
me to carry on a conversation of
this kind," said Bab.
I believe you could carry on a
conversation on any subject if you
were starving to death. You are one
of those women who always make a
man reel that you believe yourself
his superior."
Bab and I exchanged glances. Bart
had something to say.

Present Production Greater Than for
Banie Period Lut Year.
Ford Is building cars at full speed.
And, according to an official state
ment from the factory at Detroit, the
demand for Ford cars and trucks
still exceeds the output, despite the
fact that a new blgh level of pro
duction has been reached.
By the first ef May the figures rep
resenting daily production were ln
the neighborhood of 4.000 a day, so
the-May schedule was set at 101,125
cars and trucks, not including the
output of the Ford Canadian plant or
any of the foreign assembling plants.
The output mounted dally; May 12th
brought forth 4092. the greatest
number that have been produced In
one day so fur this year. Since the
month lias 25 working days, present
indications point to a new high
record.
A comparison of Ford production
figures for 1920 and 1921 discloses
the fact that for April, 1921. the
output was greater by 34,514 than
for the corresponding month a year
ago. The output for May. 1921, will
probably overBbadow May. 1920, by
between fifteen and twenty thousand
can and trucks.
Approximately 43.000 men are at
work In the Detroit plant of the Ford
Motor company. The factory Is oper
ating on full time, six days a week
and three shifts a day.
We were never In a better condi
tion than we are right now," said
Henry Ford recently.

"OUR PRICES ARE DOWN TO A LEVEL
Where You may Buy with Confidence"
Retail prices In Dry Goods and Women's Wear are DOWN 30
per cent on the average on most things we sell, and In many '
cases more than HALF.
Most economists agree that we will not be back entirely to pre
war prices for some time, and It seems fair to assume that
prices today are near a staple level.
