Ceyloneae Plumbago.
Plumbago, Ceylon's most Important
mineral product, is known all over
the world for Its luster, lubricating,
polishing and binding qualities. In
appearance It Is a stroag black crys
tnllne. There ore now about 1,000
plumbago mines In Ceylon, Includlng
nll the shallow pits, open works and
deep mines. The depth varies from a
few yards to as much as 700 feet.
Most of the mines are worked by na
tives, the only Important one con
trolled by Europeans being the Meda
pola. In tho majority of the mines
the only machinery used Is the "da
bare." This consists of a long wooden
barrel with handles nt each end. A
rope Is wound around this with a
bucket fastened to each end. It Is
worked by sever; or eight men turning
the handle.
Time Has Brought Changes.
When I was a young lady I was ex

club was nbout to give a masquerade
which I was anxious to attend, but
realizing how hnrd It would be for
me to disguise myself, and yet wish

I remarked this to a young man at
the club. He looked nt me with a

Those Who Dare Not Smile.
The ludicrous luis Its place In the
universe. It Is not a human Inven

we always consider solemnity and en

Extraordinary Time Keeping.
Methods of reckoning time have al
ways been a source of trouble to sci
entists. The first standard was the
lunar month that Is, the period of
about 2iV3 days between one new moon
and the next. Twelve of these mouths
seemed to correspond to the four sea
sons, and so the year was fixed at
804 days. They soon found that they
were getting badly mixed, that the
seasons did not correspond to the
months; In the course of 10 years
they were more Ihuii three months

added seven months In 11) years and
