Union H. 8. No. 9, Yoncalla.
Did you hear about the sjuarrel
which took place in the vegetable
garden yesterday morning? It was
witnessed by all the growing things
there, most of whom took part. In
some way, in the general fuss.
It began in this way:
The Onion bad been boasting for
some time about his wonderful
strength. He just knew he was the
strongest thing In the garden. This
seemed to displease the Cabbage most
of all. as he had been troubled a
great deal the. last two weeks kith
iha "hiv-honri " Ami now he was be
ginning to swell up so fast, with an
ger that It looked like he would
burst.
In a soft tone, the Lettuce, which
Is a very mild mannered person, was
trying his best to calm the onion ana
Cabbage, whom it seemed were
swiftly coming to blows.
"I am the strongest!" shouted the
Onion. "You are not!" sputtered the
Cubbage. "Just let him blow his
breath on you once, and you'll soon
find out who is the strongest," piped
up the Asparagus. "Let 'em bump
heads and settle it," said the Egg
plant, wbo was very careful lo keep
hid behind a large leaf for fear of
getting his own shell cracked.
The Cornstalk, who was listening
with all ears to the unusual "rum
pus," declared It a shame that the
home in which they had all been so
tenderly reared should bo disgraced
with such scenes.
Through a crack In the ground a
Potato peered out, rubbing his eyes
in astonishment. He had been tak
ing an early morning nap, and the
noisy disturbance had awakened him.
After listening a moment to the
quarrel he said in a tiny voice.
"You'd better let the Onion have his
own way, for you know everyone in
the garden says he's the strongest."
And then he hurried back to his lit
tle home underground, for fear the
big-headed Cabbage might pounce
onto him.
But stilt the quarrel continued.
"I'll knock your head off," the Onion
howled, ruffing himself out bo big it
seemed his buttons would surely fly
off.
"Just let me get at that Onion,
I'll soon finish him," screeched the
Cabbage.
Just then the Pieplant (although
of rather a soured nature, but never
theless having a very kind, generous
heart), thought of a plan which she
was sure would stop the trouble. She
said Khe would make them a lovely
pie. Think of It! Pieplant pie! The
Sugar -beet spoke right up with an
offer to furnish the sugar to sweeten
it.
But the promise of even that
tempting morsel could not distract
the attention of those two belliger
ents, who were now ready to leap at
each other's throats, or whatever It
Is that stands for throats among the
vegetable folks.
At this critical Juncture, It was
quickly seen by all that nothing
could stop them, so each and every
one of those little people decided
they had better hunt a safe place In
which to hide, as they well knew the
fighting qualities of those two boast-
The Peas rattled in terror In their
pods.
The big, fat Watermelon gathered
together all the little trailing Water
melons and started on a run down
the row.
The Beets prepared to "beat It"
The Bean decided the aafeat plaoe
for him was at the top of fall pole,
so he broke all records In climbing
there.
The Radish leaped nimbly behind
a big Squash who, unluckily, was so
fat be couldn't get out of the way.
It took the Turnip only a second
to turn the other way and down the
path he rolled until he reached the
ditch, where In he tumbled, panting
and hot, and feeling quite safe from
the blows which he knew were com
ing. They had not been nldintf very
long when they heard the Horse
Radish give a great big horse-laugh,
and peeping out of their hiding
places beheld Mr. Onion and Mr. Cab
bage standing with a grin on their
faces and shaking hands.
The two bitter enemies had de
elded that their strength was nothing
of which to boast.
One was very thankful that his
head (though only a cabbage head)
was not cracked. And the Onion
knew without counting that his but
tons were all safe.
So peace reigned once more in the
vegetable kingdom.
