Wanda Hawley -1N- 66 VILLAIN 99 Adapted from the famous French play "La Veg lione" by Alexander Bisson and Albert Carre, Comedies Vodvil Movies and Cartoon on the Border. Carried on the crest of a tidal wave of popularity, Senutor Harding, of Ohio, republican nominee for presi dent of the United Stales, was elect ed to (he position of chief executive of the nation by an overwhelming majority. Swinging Into lino with irresistible force, the Old Guard slates present ed a solid tront and In mass attack broke down all resistance and won a complete and decisive victory. The fight was over early, returns had scarcely started berore the evi dence was so conclusive of a repub lican victory that the democratic forces acknowledged defeat and con ceded the eh-ctlon of the Ohio sena tor. At 10:30 Pacific time) word was flashed that Cox's paper was printing a morning extra announcing Hunting's election. When the Cali fornia returns began to arrive show ing a landslide for the republican party, nil doubt was put away, for the addition of California's 13 elec toral votes to the states already lined up for Harding, gave him 277 vole. at the lowest esiiinute, or 1 1 moie thnn were necessary to elect. Harding s victory included all of the northern and eastern states, to gether with the Pacific Coast states and the majority of the border states including neurly all of the remaining states listed as doubtful. Ohio, the home stute of both candidates, with 24 electorul votes, went republican by an almost 2 to 1 vote, while New York with 45 voles und Pennsylvania with 38 lined up at the outset. One outstanding feature of the election was the surprising quickness with which the victory was conceded. Count had scarcely started until es timates were given out by reliable nows sources, democratic newspapers of New York announcing to tneir readers that Harding was successful, basing their conclusions on only par tial returns from outlying precincts. At 9 p. in. Harry M.' Dougherty, member ot the republican campaign committee matte undisputed claim to every northern state and th stales of Mnrvi"- vcoi Virginia, Ken tucky, Missouri, and probably Okla homa. New Orleans reported that Hard ing's vote there was 2000 more than Hughos received In the whole stute in 191G. Altogether It took but little time to determine who the people had chosen for president. NATIONAL FLOWER OF FRANCE . Iris, or Flsur-ds-Us Was Originally Called ths FIsur.de.Louls Valucc for Its Medicinal Purposes. The iris, or the fleur-de-lis. Is the national flower of France. It was originally called the fleur-de-Louis. The audents valued It highly for me dicinal purposes. A powder made from the root, mixed with honey, was used for broken bones, and It was also con sidered beneficial for snake and scor pion bites. A valuable perfume and oil was also obtained from the Iris. The legend as to how the flower re ceived Its name goes back to the Creeks. Iris was the messenger of the gods, and the rainbow was dedi cated to her. On her birthday. Juno Invited all the flowers to celebrate the occasion. They all came In their prettiest froeks. Among them were three sisters. gorgeously dressed In gowns of purple, yellow and red, and who were unknown. Since they had no name, they were called Iris, because their gowus were the color of the rainbow. Since Iris wss the messenger of the gods, and conducted the souls of dead women to their final resting place, the Greeks decorated the graves of their women with purple Iris. This flower was widely used In old Esyptlan architecture. It signified power and eloquence to the Egyptians, and was,' therefore, carved on the brow of the Sphinx, and upon the scepters of their kings. tMMMIt ttllail! HEART REVIVED BY MASSAGE TOMORROW.
