Sea Iskintl hull of the American
Museum of Nuturnl History in New
York. The strung sea chart is the
plft of Unhurt Louis Stevenson, who
lived on the Island of Samoa four
years hefore his death.
Distances between the islands were
measured by hours, not miles. These
charts are but little used now, but
there was a time when each young
chief was compelled to pass his exam
ination In the charts, knowing them by
heart, as they never were tiiken to sea.
Some students say the sticks represent
currents, as there are four distinct
sets of swells from four quarters of
the seas at various seasons of naviga
tion, which were closely studied by
the ua lives.
The Olckcissel.
The dlckeissel Is a small migratory
bird, about six nnd one-fourth Inches
Ions, tlie male beautifully blended with
yellow, white nnd nniy, 'and with a
black throat pnteh and brown shoulders.
The female is duller. These birds are
very numerous in the middle portions
of the United States, frequenting dry,
busily hVlds or prairies. The dickclssel
Is a persistent songster, although Its
snug is weak and has little nielody. In
July uim) August, when many birds are
silent, dk-krissels continue their plain
tive chant, even on the most sultry
days. Their din Ming is a simple
"ciiip, ehip, che-ehe-chee." They
build their nests of weeds, grasses,
roetiers, com husks nnd the like. They
build on the ground, In bushes and
thistles, nnd sometimes ln trees. The
eggs of the dlekclsel ore four or five
in number. They are a plain, bluish
white, hardly distinguishable from
those of the bluebird.
Beads In the Levant.
Rends are mote necessary tlina
bread to the Levantine. Men, women
and children wear aud carry beads to
ward off ill link. Even the horses
and donkeys have strands of beads
nbout their necks "to bailie the evil
eye" and the liao; horus of the, work
oxen are decorated uith blue and
white beads to keep them from fall
Ins prey to disease.
In Athens, Constantinople, Tlflis,
Smyrna nnd other cities of the Levunt
men of all classes curry short strands
of fldsol beads which they play with
while walking lu the street, riditiff In
sweet cars and trains. Just as nervous
men In the West linger their watch
