Far West Has Had More Gaso
line Than Ever Before But
Full Supply Not Enough.
ESSENTIALS SUPPLIED
BUuidard Oil Company Iaaue abate
ment Itecuruuig I-ack of (iaaollu
for Motor Car on Pacifla
Coaat and Elaewlier.
There is no mystery In the existing
shortage of gasoline on the Pacific
coast, says tho Standard Oil Bulle
tin. It Is not a case of diminished
supply the Far West has never had
as much gasoline as this year but
one of increased consumption. The
refineries of California are this year
manufacturing a greater volume of
gasoline than last year, and great
quantities are being brought to the
far west from mid-western fields and
Mexico. Yet. this larger supply does
not satisfy the enormous demands of
tthe scores of thousands of additional
automobiles, trucks, farm tractors,
gas engines, pumps and other equip
ment dependent upon gasoline tor
power.
Curiously enough, In the face of
such a well known fact as the aston
ishing development of the automu
llve Industry and the equally" Import
ant fact that the supply of crude oil
production has not kept apace d5-
Hpllo Intensive effort and highest
prices In history there Is a lack or
public understanding of the situation.
There exist misapprehensions, re
ports and rumo.'S which are wide
spread, so widely circulated, Indeed,
and so similar in so many separated
localities, as to give the thought of
'propaganda.
Karly this year this company be
Tan to warn the public of an Impend
ing shortage In petroleum products,
and these warnings have been re
peated once or twice each month
rlnce then, in public statemen's and
advertisements. As was foreseen,
the coming of spring, with the de
velopment of work on the farms, and
of summer, with the increased use
of automobiles, brought a demand
for gasoline far in excess of the sup
nly. In April this company began to
rtsk the public "to buy as little gaso
line as possible use what you must
waHte none." In May it became
apparent that there would not be
enough ganollne to meet the demand,
nnd with the Issue clean-cut befor"
It and its duty clear, this company
determined that so far as Ita ptno
Mne wus concerned industry and ag
riculture should first be served, and
'.ales of gasoline for pleasure pur
iosps diminished. Hence, certain
curtailments were made on sales to
non-commercial vehicles. To have
continued. In. the circumstances, un
limited pales for non-commercial use,
nrould have meant Idle tractors on
he farms! There was. therefore, no
-iltornailve but curtailment and con
tervatlon. Thus far, the situation appears to
have ben met. in that the shortage
ia not Interefered with industry or
agriculture, except In a very few
ases and for brief periods. The
eorreotness of the course followed
can not be questioned.
