Makes Desperate
Theft Attempt
CORVALLIS, July 23 R. W
Kern, express messenger on the Sou
thern Pacific, Is In Jail here today
awaiting the action of the grand Jury
on a sharge df grand larceny. Kern
is accused of taking $1,055.62 from
the local express company and it Is
reported that he has confessed.
The money was transmitted by L.
L. Graham, the Southern Pacific
agent, to Portland. All the banks
being closed on July 6, when Air.
Graham sent the money, he sent the
money in currency by express. It was
receipted for by express messenger
Conley on the train 'that goes thru
here from Newport at 4:25. For some
reason, Conley neglected to transfer
the money at Albany to the main line
but carried It through with him to
the end of his trip. He broush it bock
again the next day and again neg
lected to transfer It at Albany. Al
Corvallis. however, ho turned II
over to express clerk, Raymond Anderson.
When Kern's train came along
bound for Portland, another clerk In
the local oflflce, Albert Presly, took
the money package with two other
packages Into the express car and
snld, "Here's a ilttn up Bill," which
is the customary method of handling
such transactions. .
Presley then 'turned around to
superintend some other loading for
the fraction of a nrinute. but tnai
fraction was long enough for Kern to
dispose of the money package and
say to Presley:
Where your intra . pacxage.
here."
He had (signed for two.
Presley Insisted that he had
brought It In and Kern showed him
that it was not there.. The train
pulled out "and Presley reported the
matter.
Detectives of the American R. K.
Express company were Immediately
put on th trail and with local of
ficers succeeded In discovering some
things on Kern that convinced them
that he was the fellow they were
after. They found that he had been
under suspicion In other trou tiles ano
that be had been arrested for boot
lf?ffint over in Idaho and a numbe
of other things that they thought
ittstlfled them In accusing Kern.
When Ihev did so and he saw that
they had him In a tight place he gave
tin and confessed, saying mat wnen

car that dny. he had thrown the
package behind the toilet.
All of the money was recovered
with the exception of a few checkF
which 'Kern had destroyed.
