CEE1TIDJO MA.V'V LETKR8.
The Chamber of Commerce la re
ceiving great number of letters re
garding Douglas county, the majority
of inquiries coming from points In
Montana, Idaho and Washington.
People in those sections are anxiouk
f to find less severe climates where
there Is little wind. In answer the
weather statistics direct from the
i IT. S. weather bureau are being fur
jtiiehed and stress placed upon the
fact that Roseburg has the lowest
jwlnd velocity of any place in the
. United States. Were It not for thr
: government weather bureau office
'there doubtless would be many peo
ple refute to believe that the average
"yearly wind velocity for Roseburg
. Is only three miles per hour. This
la by far the lowest to be found
, In anv place In the country but the
government records for many years
show that this average Is correct.
In fact, In several years the average
for the year was below three miles.
I Such conditions are very attractive
Mo people residing In the wind-swept
areas of Montana and Idaho and they
I are exceedingly anxious to learn
more regarding the county.

UKNHOX AND HUDTH CLASH.
PORTLAND, July 7. Despite the
strenuous objection of Chairman S.
Benson, the state highway commis
sion thia morning voted to co-operate
with Lane county in the proposed
construction of ten miles of unfin
ished highway known aa the hlgh-
paae-low-pasa project between Eu
gene and Florence
Chairman Benson objected to us
ing state funda for the proposition
at thia time, and moved that the
matter be postponed until next year.
Commissioners Booth and Kiddle,
however, voted for Immediate co
operation with the county.
'This is the most outrageous graft
ever perpetrated on the state hlah
way commission," declared Mr. Ben
son. "The proposed road is one or
the least Important projects In the
state, and It would be ' foolish to
appropriate state money on a new
proposition at a time when our funds
are low. There are hundreds of miles
of important road construction in
ther counties which we should take
up before spending money on this
road. I'm going to fight this and
take It to the courts."
Commissioner Booth said the road
s not a new project, but that the
1919 legislature provided for it. He
said all the county desires Is a 50
per cent contribution from the state
o put the road in condition across
the summit of the mountains.
The commission voted to appro
priate $25,000 toward the work on
he McKensle river near Blue river.,
with the understanding that Lane
ounty pay bark 1o the highway
reasury an amount equal to the con
tribution sought.
