THIS VII.LAtiK AtilTATOK.
Most every live community has a
thins, called the "village agitator."
He Is the kind of Individual that Is
seemingly working for the bet" In
terests of the town, he Is loud n -i
praises of the city and county's re
sources to fatti'ii his own wallet
and he never loses an opportunity to
hand out a knock lo ull persons,
singly or collectively, Ihat do not co
incide and thruw their undivided
support to any shady transaction
that he may Initiate. He has a faculty
"all his own" of putting over things
which seldom redound lo the good of
the community, and with a well-filled
vocabulary, aivn honeycombed foun
dation of facts manages, occasionally.
to "pull off" something that has the
esr-marks of a successful financier
but will not bear close scrutiny In
any particular. Me constantly seeks
to defame the character and stand-!
lug of Individuals, and occasionally
Ms poisoned arrows are directed at
business and commercial Interests of
his own home town, and, while his
ravings are not taken seriously by
those familiar with the snake-Ilk"
policy employed lo carry out his
plans, they have, nevertheless, a
rather nauseating Impression and
create a ripple of distrust with those
persons whose business qualifications
are of a sound and substantial
character. He Is a necessary evil
but as this category of undesirables
are being gradually thinned out. It Is
oulte possible that the city or Rose-;
burg will soon register his exit. I
' I
Just as soon as the democrats gel
their standard bearer nailed to the
post the public will have earned a j
good, long, substantial rest from nit-1
llonal politics. It's too hot to talk I
politics, anyway. (
When the parents of a girl of lite
tender age of fourteen years give,
their consent to entering the matri
monial arena It Is certainly a God
send that we have a state law that
does not permit "traffic In children."
Both the republican and demo
cats have "passed the buck" on the
soldiers' bonus bill. The big Inter
ests seem to be In the saddle, always,
when it conies to distributing money
'both to themselves and for any
other cause.
Vacations are supposed to make
you eager for work, but they don't
Instead they give you the Idea you
hould never work again.
Oratory proves nothing, but so
long as the masses believe It does,
voice, will be at a premium over
brains.
There's no use wasting all this
warm weather In. one spot. Bettor

No man Is perfect and whenever
he gets caught he seems to take a
good deal of pride In the fact.

HA IK WORDY BATTLE.
A wordy battle nearly ending In
blows occurred this morning In front
of Kapp's restaurant on Sheridan
street, the argument fortunately
ceasing before It wuxod too hot. An
unsavory looking Individual upon
ordering his breakfast in the rev
taurant, demanded more sugar than
the small allowance that la now be
ing given at all restuuranta, and
when the extra sweetening was re
fused, called the proprietor and the
house a few nut very complimentary
nunies. George Happ. the owner of
Ihe restaurant, took exception to the
remarks snd the argument was con
tinued for some time In front of the
restaurant, hut ended before any
shots were fired.

I TELL JOHN ABOUT KARL.
"Oh, John, John, pleas don't
lets begin to quarrel over the mo
ney. You told me the other day you
were never making so much in your
lite, ana now you ar quibbling over
125 a week, which I want to give
to an expert to car for our child."
John had the grace to look rath
er sheepishly at this.
ur-u wnn bnnw IfstllArin ha
said, "I haven't told you that I have!
been dabbrlng In stocks a good deal !
lately, and I haven t had the best
of luck. Unt'1 I recoup, W will have
to go a little slow."
"John, we will never recoup as
long as yon play t h stock market.
You know I rather Imagined you
were doing that very thing. Why do
you do It? You don't know the game.
Why sit in with the other fellow',
who has played It all his life? You
see, dear, I am talking to you In the
vnrnacular df vou men. for I want
you to look upon my advice as thol
given by a man friend, and not oy
a woman and your wife. Perhaps
then you will heed It."
"Now look here .Katherine, I have
told you I was going to change, but
I want It distinctly understood right
here that I am not going to change
so far that I will allow you to un
my business for me. I never lose any
more than I can afford on the stock
market." .
Practising Petty Economies.
"All right; that being the case,
don't ask me to be forever practis
ing petty economies, for If you do.
it shows me you are loBlng more
than I can afford."
"You can afford. What do you
mean YOU can rfrford?,'
"I mean just this John, that as
long as I know you are plavlng tho
sto-k market and taking money out
of the legitimate channels to gam
ble for that is all It Is I shall have
everything to make myself comfort
able and shall Indulge In as many
of my luxurious desires, besides."
"Qood Lord, Katherlrie, when you
say such things as these. I want to
spank you." As he said thla he
seemed to get more angry, and I,
seeing his anger, became furious.
"Well, why don't vou?" I naked I
"Hush. You know that I wor.M not
go as far as that."
"There are worse things In this
world."
"But Katherine. why aren't you
womanly. Bven if you do think I
am wrong in this, why arent you
diplomatic?"
"Simply because I can't be hyper
critical. If I coula 1 would probably
he say'ng. Oh, you poor de-ir, I am
so aorry you made these losses. 1
will he Just as economical aa I can
and will help you make It un." and
all the while John. In my heart 1
would he seething and furious at
your selfishness." ,
"You are a very frank woman,
arent you? Did It ever enter your
mind that there might be another
woman who might always be doing
the thing you call hyperc?:cal. who
Is always making me think I am su
perhuman Instead oh a cur. Did you
ever think what this woman might
do in your life and mine?"
Always Stood Ready.
"No, I hav never thought very
much about It. 1 know, of course,
that Elisabeth Moreland has always
stood near to take adv.'.ifert of
every bad play on my part. But
while we are on the subject, did you
ever stop to think that there might
be some man who was perfectly
willing to give me that respect of
my opinions, which I demand and
o whom I would not have to be
hypercritical?" .
"If you mean Karl Shepard. you
are wav off. Karl Is quite as human
is I em. I know him much better
than you do and LI know that he
"s lust like every other man. When
he la tryine to get a womn he plays
the game Just as I would."
"John Gordon. Do yon mean to
tell me that vou think Karl Shepard
is trvlng to get the wife of his best
friend."
"Well. I never did until Just late
ly. I hnve been hearing a lot about
Mm since vou hve been away."
"From whom?"
"tt Isn't necessary for me to tell
VO"."
"No. It Isn't. But I fear vou have
eathered a wrong Impression from
vnnr ft-iond. I am going to tell you
something."
