Alexandria Modern City.
Alexandria, founded by the world
conqueror. Alexander the Great, is an
Kgyptlnn city that Is eager to lose Its
connection with the far away pasi and
become completely modernized. Kate
favors this ambition, for the won
ders that Cleopatra knew have
been eaten by lire or swept nay by
the sea. Alexandria Is n city of trade
and fashion, dominated by prosperous
Knropeans too deeply absorbed In Ihe
stock exchange to lie even vaguely In
terested In the romantic side of their
city.
Kxcept for s few visitors who Inve
read n little history and are wildly In
quisitive regarding Cleopatra's palace
and PmM.icy's pillar, the ruins of Al
exandria rest peacefully, unphoto
graphed nnd nnohlppod by souvenir
hunters. One thing ngalnt the popu
larity of Alexandria's ruins Is their
scantiness. For the most part, they
consist of a few carved sionc ii.ul
Koine "sites."
