cations which have surprised some
or me uninitiated.
If married, their husbands nui
prevlouly have been presented at a
levee, they must have entree to th
White House and if they have been
divorced It must be indisputably
shown that the divorce must have
been granted In her favor in open
trial at which both parties were rep
resented In court and where alimony
and custody of the children have'
been granted to the woman. Kven
In such cases the demand for legal
details Is so minute that the king
In deference to the ideas of the
queen, it Is said, baa let It be known
that It is Inadvisable for divorcees
to apply at all.
Applications of Americans for
court presentations must be madr
to the American ambassador and he
stands sponsor for those ha selects.
Of course this feature of the embassy
work Is almost as carefully guarded
out of respect for the feelings of the
many who try and fall, as Is some of
the important diplomatic correspond
ence. But It Is known among Ameri
cans In London that the list of ap
plications Is quite long this year.
This Is emphasized by an embassy
circular which has come Into the
hands of some Influential Ameri
cans here explaining what Is required
of successful applicants. It It
longer and much more explicit than
the usual circulars on the same sub
ject and does not mince words re
garding what may and what may not
be expected.
Considerable apace la devoted to
changes In dress required. In the
Interest of economy the queen has
decreed thnt women shall no longer
i wear head feathers or trains on their
i dresses at court. Some of the former
adornments for the men also have
been eliminated but it still is stipu
lated what kind of buttons they
must wear' on their knee breetches
and that they must not wear buckle
Ion their patent leather pumps.
