CHICAGO, June 7. At the first
''(-publican national convention held
'ii Chirnno 60 vears ago:
An Iowa delegate walked 150 miles
'o get to a railroad to come to the
nnventlon.
Special railroad rates were made
nd Chicago's population probably
'oubled in convention week.
Hotel rooms wero $1.50 to 2 . &0
day.
Crowds were so great that billiard
allies in the hotels were pressed In-
o service as beds.
The "Wigwam" In which the con
ventlon waB held was probably about
he size of the annex to the Coleslum
n which this year's convention takes
luce.
The Wigwam's profuse decoration
vas largely furnished by the repub
liran women of Chicago. They were
nvlted to come "nrmed and equip
ped with thope formidable weapons
r.eedles. thimbles, scissors, etc., etc'
When a special train pulled In
with the Massachusetts and other
New Kngland delegates, rockets were
u-nt up and a cannon boomed to an
nounce their arrival to awaiting
rlends.
The nailery In the convention hall
-as reserved for women and their e-
or!s. Because of the great number
if men unable to get In, one man wax
reported trying to get Into the gal
'fry with an Indian squaw selling
T.oVcasins as his credentials, but was
excluded on the ground that she was
10 lady.
The two chief nominating speeches
were made in less than 30 words
Abraham Lincoln was placed in
nomination in 26 words.
The making of the presidential
lominiitlon was announced to the
city by the firing of a cannon placed
on the roof of the convention nan.
That night cannon and rockets
were fired, bonfires lighted, and mul
titudinous parades formed, their par
ticipants carrying anything that
would serve even to rakes anu nsn
inn nolea..
The foregoing data was obtained
rom the library of the Chicago His
torical society, which has various
relics of the convention and cam
paign that followed.

How a thirsty inhabitant uf these
United Stales iiiay-obtuiu a drink
Iroin our more or less amiable neigh
bor on the south, Is told in the
June Popular Mechanics in an in
teresting manner by John Kdwin
iogg, M-bo seems to know all the iito
and outs and the little tricks re
forred to along the Mexican bordei
by hunters of the old-fashioned,
high-voltage liquor.
If one is thirsty and takes a tri-
to the Pacific coast. It Is only neces
sary to buy a ticket over the newest
of our transcontinental railroads
and ride in a buffet car part of the
way. Then, too, the train make
stops at convenient points along the
route where passengers muy step off
and put one foot on a brass rail to
exchange American money for uuy
sort of wet goods to be found In a
well-stocked American cellar. This
railroad dips Into Mexico in two dif
ferent places, and the buffet car,
which travels In bond through the
United States, la open for business
as soon as the southern boundary U
p&Bsed.
Of course, bringing liquor out of
Mexico for future use in the United
States Is contrary to law, but Ameri
cans who are thirsty are likewise in
genious. A favorite passengers'
method that has thus far defied the
vigilance of the federal authorities
's that of railroading the stuff with
he aid of a Mexican accomplice.
There are usually a lot of poverty
stricken peons hanging around the
Mexican railroad stations to whom
Untie Sam's dollars speak with
loud voice. As the train is about to
start he hangs a jug or bottle Inside
the trucks of a Pullman car, or other
wise conceals It abutit the train.
Later when the train stops at some
way station In the United States, per-
hpps well over Into Arizona or Texas,
nnd far from the gaze of border of
flclals, the passenger steps out. He
nnows where .o look for the lug. and
then a little party Is put on In the
Pullman smoker. Then, too. pints
nnd half pints fit very nicely into
I'uiiman car water coolers, venti
lators, and other numerous hiding
Places about the average transcon
tinental train, and even If a customs
officer happens to find them it ii
rather difficult to say Just who ptil
them there. That hot-water bottle?
and Ice bags are also bandy prohlbl
lion-dodging containers is Indicated
by the fact that the druggists in the
border towns declare they nre ni
longer able Co keep this kind of good
In slock.
Prohibition is the least of thi
worries of Americana living along
the Mexican border.
An American has but to sallv u
to ono of the fences that separate
the United States and Mexico. Th
government has erected heavy bar
bed wire structures on the line a'
ill the points of entry, but the" do
not completely close the border by
any means. A Mexican on the look
out for this kind of business, pro
duces the desired bottle, holds It
close to the fence, and hands the
American a straw. The straw lf
again passed through the fence, but
this time the end that Is In Mexicc
?:oes Into the neck of the rattle, and
the end that Is In the United States
goes into the American's mouth. The
rules of the game are that the Ameri
can exhales before going Into action
then he shuts bis eyes and sucks in
as much liquor as he is able to swal
low without taking another breath
For sanitary reasons, manv Ameri
cans carry their own rubber tubes
for this form of prohibition dodglni?
hut the Merlins limit the size thnt
may be urd to one-eighth of an Inch
interior diameter.
The Mexicans also sell eggs thru
the International fence, and several
grown-up men standing on thf
American side suck them! As a mat
ter of fact the eges are onlv shells.
the contents of which have been re
moved and replaced with whiskey,
gin. wine, or other varieties of alco
holic cheer. The eggshells, after be
Ing filled with liquor, are sealed with
paraffin, and the dry customer after
buying one has only to pick off' the
seal and help himself to the thirst
quenching contents.

Will Repair The
Suspension Bridge
Extensive repairs are to be niadu
to the North Uinpqua suspension
bridge In the forest reserve Ihl
mouth and a crew of men uudoi
Deputy (Supervisor O. A. ilonebrake
will leave this city about the middle
of the month to start the work. The
bridge was put in ten years ago and
siuce that tlmo has -had no repairs
made.' The engineers constructing
the bridge were forced to rush the
lob and used freed fir timber in Its
luilding. it will probably be found
necessary to rebuild two of the tow
ers as the cables are slightly out of
line, but only repair work will be
done this summer. As soon as the
bridge Is put In proper condition to
stand the travel over it, the workmen
will endeavor to secure sufficient
cedar timber to rebuild the sections
which must be replaced and It will
probably be found necessary to float
'.he logs down the river several miles
lo the bridge. The timber will b
cut nnd allowed to season before
being put into the bridge and It is
believed that It will need no more
attention for a number of years. This
is one of the largeet suspension
bridges maintained by the forest
service.
