started. An alarm was turned In for
the tire department, which quickly
responded, but before its arrival Mr.
Love, of the electric store, started
the apparatus on the prize winning
truck and with the aid of the electric
pump drew off a bucket of water and
quickly extinguished the fire.

A cat census has been taken aboard
the super-dreadnaught Mississippi, at
Los Angeles harbor, with the result
that the largest cat was found to
bear the smallest name and the
smnllest cat the longest.
The big cat with the small name
Is "Flop." and the little cat with the
large name is "Perlcla Desdemona
De." Other cats are called "Segu
tus," "Sausallto." "Seattle," "Mar-
cella" and "Baltimore City.','

Mrs. John Slierwin Crosby, called
"the mother of New York women
democrats," a special train carrying
54 women delegates and alternates to
the national democratic convention
in San Francisco will depart from
New York June 19. This will be the
first expedition of its kind in the
United tilates. Many of the. women
will be accompanied by their hus
Dands. chlldreu or other relatives.
The party will be augmented by dele
gates from other states at various
points enroute to Chicago, and after
the convention the members will visit
Pike's Peak, Colorado Springs, the
Grand Canyon of the Colorado,
Riverside. Hollywood and Los An
geles and the Catallna Islands. The
return will be by way ol tne Cana
dian Rockies, reaching New York on
the evening of July 11.
The delegates-at-large from New
York are Elizabeth Marbury and
Harriet May Mills, and the altern-
ates-at-large are Mrs. Maurice Con
nolly, of Corona, L. I., and Mrs. Nel
lie Hewitt, of Carthage, N. Y.
Mrs. Crosby organized the first
Women's Democratic club In the
United States In 1904. It was located
here and subsequently, In 1912, she
founded the Women's National-
Democratic League. Two years later
she established a New York siaie
branch of the national body. Mrs.
Crosby says she cherishes no Illu
sions as to what women, in their first
actual participation In a national
political convention, will be able to

eling and repairing the I. O. O. F.
building at the corner of Cass and
Jackson streets. Contractor Runyan
this morning placed a crew of men
at work in starting the building
which will be erected immediately
south of the main structure and
which' will be occupied by the Peo
ples Supply company during the time
the work on the large building is
under wny. Mr. Runyan hopes to
have the store room ready for occu
pancy by the middle of the month
and will thin start the task of re
modeling the lodge building proper.
