Names are a curious study. Tlie
Snilth family nae commonly o
siild to be the most numerous of any
of the family groups In this country.
This claim waa confirmed by the
figures given out by the war risa
bureau, showing that of the men on
their cards, the enormous number of
64.180 signed the name Smith. The
Johnsons came next with 41.50. The
Drowns wero third, with 29,06(1.
It would be an Interesting subject
of speculation for the phllologim or
philosopher, to see If any reason
could he determined why the Smiths
have risen to this proud numerical
superiority. Why are there more
Smiths tian Thompsons or Kobln
sons or Joneses?
Many surnames originally came
from the trade which people fol
lowed. In the days of chivalry,
horses were the chief means of loco
motion and transportation. There
must have been a Smith at every
cross roads. Primitive custom called
him Mister or Master Smith. His
son followed the mine occupation
and took the same title for genera
tion!. It would seem possllile that
the Smiths, following a vigorous and
athletic calling, should acquire as a
tribe, a powerful physical develoti
ment. Perhaps then they might he
expected to propagate faster and dn

ordinary run of people. But the dayt
when the ordinary family of English
stock had eight to ten children hive
long since passed. To get these fam
ilies now you have to go among the
newcomers. Perhaps the directories
of 1970 will show that the Suilllis
have been pulled down from their

alien slocks, who are even now build
ing up armies of descendants In our

loveliness of the flowers. It does not
take such a lot of time to develop a
beautiful garden, and the results or'
a glorious compensation for the effort.

Frank C. Bell, 25. of 500 East 29th
street, this city, wat killed In a fall
ever horseshoe falls, on the east
fork of the Lewis river, yesterday
afternoon.
Bell, who was with a fishing
party, slipped when at the edge of
the cliff and fell over 40 feet. He
was dead when the other members
of the party found him.
Funeral arrangements will be
made this afternoon. He is tur
vlved by hit parents, Mr. and Mrs.
C. A. Bell, of Vancouver, and twe
sisters, Mrs. J. W. Simmons, of
Portland, and Mrs. T. A. Raffety, of
Roseburg.
