Under a recent ruling by the treas
ury department the tax on toilet pre
parations and patent and proprietary
medicines Is based upon the selling
price of each article and not upon the
total price of a number of articles, j
If a person buys five packages of;
cough drops, a 1 cent stamp must be
attached to each package. If a per
son purchases a tube of tooth paste
for 35 tents and a bolle of perfume
for 65 certs, a 2 rent stamp must be
placed on tho tooth paste and 3 cents
on the perfume a total of 6 cents.
In other words, the tax Is on each
article and Is not on the combined
purchase price. This revokes a rul
ing previously made by the department.
