The town boosting movement and
board of trade organization of 10 to
15 years ago, devoted their principal
energy to working; for new manu
facturing Industries. The similar
movement of today has gone on to
a new point of view. The old time
board of trade had as its slogan "A
bigger and busier city." It tried to
secure growth and development, be
fore It had proved that the town
was worthy of It. The modern or
ganization, which in many places
ttkes the name of a Chamber of
Commerce, adopts as its slogan "A
bettor city." It believes that If you
make a beter town, growth and de
velopment will be almost automatic
The modern town boosting move
ment is glad to welcome now indus
tries, and It does Its best to get
them. It sees the most hope In the
promising young men of its owik
community, who want to start some
Industry In a small way, and who
if successful will remain 111 the town.
Many small concerns thus assisted
grow to become great industries.
Modern town promotion urges the
people to boost the home town, to
say a good word for It every chance
they get. But If a town has been
Islow to take up new ideas, all the
boosting they can do won t amount
to much. But If a town shows civic
f spirit. If it tries to provide the fa
,' cllitles of modern life, you can't
stop its growth. Business men who
have dealings with the place, travel
ing ' salesmen and other visitors,
young people who come from there,
people who movo away, all spread
the news that. It la a hustling place.
Newspaper articles describing Its ac
. tlvltlea are generally copied. A pro
gressive town finds that it has be
come widely known In a very snort
time.
Now that the city Is Inaugurating
an "overall club" the fellow who
can well afford to buy this brand of
clothing will make it hard "pick
ing" for the man who, by necessity,
cannot afford anything better Ih-.n
overalls to carry on his daily toll.
There is nothing to prevent the price
of the common material going en
tirely out of harmony with the purse
of the ordinary individual by the
demand made by the "new wrinkle"
to cut the high cost of living.

Now In regard to broccoli seed.
While Dr. Barley has been growing
some seed for a number of years,
numerous other growers buve bepn
doing the same thing although
many of them stuck up rather poor
ly as publicity agents. 1 am at a
loss to understand why the News
Review should boost one man's seed
to the exclusion of all others unless
perchance they have made some pri
vate tests at times when newsprint
prices were advancing so rapidly as
to encourage the ida that broccoli
growing might be even more profit
able than journalism.
The writer has been growing some
broccoli seed, very successfully, for
several years, and. like every other
seed grower, thinks he has the best
yet. However, 1 believe your ad
vertising columns are really the
proper place for such claims, so I
shall attempt to tell about my broc
coli seed In tht manner.
Yours truly,

LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE
Editor Roseburg News-Review:
In last evening's paper you cave
some prominent space In settlnc
forth certain claims regarding the
broccoli Industry. While Hr. Ilallev
may have encouraged the growing of
broccoli, through various fraternal
and commercial bodies. I think we
should all remember ami give credit
to the man who first discovered that
the crop could be grown here Mr.
Klljah Winston, deceased. .Mr. Wins
ton was one of the pioneer gardners
of the I'nipciua valley and I want to
say right hero that after twenty
years' experience In the vegetnhli
business, visiting Important produc
ing sections all over the country
that he was one of the most expert
gardners I ever met. It Is easy
enough for us to encourage the
growing of a crop on a commercial
acale that costs but little, hut the
real honor should be given to the
man who first conceived the Idea or
growing tho crop In this section.
I came to Roseburg In 1910 and
the following spring was greatly
surprised and puzzled to observe my
neighbor and competitor going Into
market with wagon loads of magnifi
cent cauliflower. Mr. Winston was
sagacious most pioneers are, so he
sold bis broccoli under the name of
' "winter cauliflower" a perfectly
correct term, which however, never
enlightened other gardners to the
extent that they could become com
petitors. But It is hard to keep a

Anyone wishing to vote or. the
measures submitted by the legisla
ture at the May 21st election must
register at once, but tbey will not
be required to register their name
with either the democratic or re
publican party. This was the main
topic of discussion at the meeting of
the Rose school parent-teachers' as
sociation last evening and it was de

be given the matter owing to the
fact that it is not thoroughly under
stood by the majority of citizens.
