GLENDALE RESIDENT IS
HELD TO GRAND JURY
AfTER HEARING THERE
It appears that Glendule has again
unearUiL'U another bit of meretric
ious atroeity that bids fair to ter
minate in the zero class, and judg
ing from the meager particulars
reaching Ibis city today may no?
reach the courts, so lacking is tile
evidence to warrant dragging a re
sponsible man and an irresponsible
girl of lender years into the meshes
of the law on uncorroborated evi
dence. A well known Olendale citizen was
arrested at that place yesterday
charged with a statutory offense
against the person of u 14-year-old
girl. The man was given bearing
before Justice Clarke at Glendale,
and after hearing the testimony of
the girl in the case, he was bound
over to the grand jury, under bonds
of 10(10.
The girl, who is said (o be rather
simple-minded, met the man about a
mile south of the town ot Glendale
and she Is alleged to have taken IJ.e
accused by the arm in a friendly
manner. The two walked a short
distance thru the sheltering trees.
The mother of the girl witnessed the
occurrence and called to her daugh
ter. The two returned and were
btter haled into court on accusations
made by the Irritated parent, the
man being charged with an attempt
at rape. At first, upon being inter
rogated, the girl denied that any
thing out of tlie ordinary took place,
but later upon being urged by her
interrogators, finally admitted that
the man took undue liberty of a
minor nature, by answering a short,
gruff "yes" to a question put to her.
On this thin evidence the man was
bound over to the grand jury.

delegation, despite the conciliatory
efforts of the llritish and French,
are apparently determined to ex
ecute their threat to withdraw from
the peace conference. For a time
it seemed that the angered, Italians
had been temporarily appeased. A
high .authority announced shortly
before noon, following a conference
between Premiers Orlando and Lloyd
Heorge, that "the Italians will ' not
depart today." Less than two hours
later, however, the Italian press
bureau officially stated that while
the Italian delegates would not de
part at 2 o'clock, as scheduled, they
would probably leave on a special
train tonight.

ment ruins everything," so Premier
Orlando declared in 'an announce
ment for the press. "It appeals to

According to a current report, Roy
Farnum, who was con vie ted in t lie
circuit court here a few years ago oi
murdering his sweetheart, Kdnu
Morgan, whose charred remains
were found in the smouldering ruins
of an old barn in Cow creek valley,
has been paroled alter Men ing hut
approximately two jears of his sen
tence of from three to twenty years
for rape, and from one to f ii teen
years for manslaughter. The case
attracted widespread at lent ion and
two juries failed to reach a verdict
in the matter, and a third trial was
necessary. The defendant was ably
defended by Attorney W. W. Card
well, and the case was bitterly prose,
cuted by Cieo. M. Brown and later by
District Attorney Heorge Xeuner,
who finally succeeded in securing a
conviction. For a time ft seemed

A meeting cd' the carnival commit
tee was held lust evening at Hie
office of C. S. lleinline. A. C. Mara
lers was elected chairman of the car
nival committee and C. S. Heinlino
sccretitry. Provision was made for a
Monographer lo assist Mr. Heinllue
in handling the correspondence con
nected with the office.
The ofticial name- selected for the
carnival is thu Ninth Roseburg
Si raw berry Carnival and Sports
men's Tournament. An advertising
appropriation has been made and (he
carnival will he given wide publicity.
The contest for queen was ono of
t he m os I important quest ions tit be
discussed. After due consideration
the following ages for candidates
were decided upon : Children's
queen, age 10 to 12 years; carnival
queen, IS to 75 years. All candidates
for queen ia the respective classes
must lie between the ages mentioned
abo e. Already several candidates
have been mentioned ami nu exciting
contest is expected. An appropria
tion of $;"iii for the queen's costumes
has been made. Miss Agnes Pitch
ford was chosen as chairman of the
c hildren'H queen committee.
There will be n meeting of the
chairman of all the various commit
tees next Monday evening at Secre
tary Heinline's office.

for the establishing and maintenance
of a public library in the city of

now apply to the Carnegie library

suitable building here. A tax not to
exceed eight-tenths of a mill will be
levied against all tuxable property In
the city for the purpose of creating
a fund for providing, equipping and
maintaining of said public, institu
tion. O. K. Frank, manager of the local
water and light, company, notified
