Oregon, is hereby notified to begin
' at once to effectively exterminate
i and destroy all such digger ground
squirrels.
Tiao following poison for mixing
und instructions for use thereof is
the method most expedient and ef- j
fective to be used for the extermina- j
tion und destruction of such ground j
squirrels' and is hereby recommend- I
ed, to-wft, alkaloid strychnine used j
on either barley or wheat, hurley !
preferred, mixed according to the- j
following formula and manner, to-
wit:
Barley, clenn grain, 16 quarts.
Strychnine - (powdered alkaloid) 1
ounce.
Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
1 ounce.
Thin starch paste, 3-4 pint.
Heavy corn syrup, Vi pint.
Glycerine, 1 tablespoonful.
Saccharine, 1-10.
This material should be mixed as
follows: Mix thoroughly 1 ounce of
powdered strychnine (alkaloid) und
1 ounce of common baking soda.
Sift this Into :t-4 pint or thin hot
paste and stir to a smooth creamy
mass. (The starch paste is made by
dissolving 1 heaping tablespoonful
of dry gloss starch in a little cold
water, which is then added to H-4
pint of boiling water. Boil and stir
constantly until a clear thin paste is
formed). Add pint heavy corn
syrup and 1 tablespoonful of glycer
ine und stir thoroughly. Add 1-10
ounce of saccharine and stir thor
oughly. Four this mixture over 1G
quarts of clenn barley and mix well
so that each grain is coated.
One quart of the poisoned grain
mixed as aforesaid Is sufficient for
forty or fifty haltH and this quantify
scattered along squirrel trails or on
clenn hard places on the surface
about the holes will not endanger
stock. Strychnine In nny Term other
than the powdered stryehnlno (alka
loid) is not effective in the above
formula.
From the date hereof until May
1st is the most effective time to
poison and destroy the digger squir
rels, as they are Just emerging from
their hibernation. They nre hungry
and rood ts scarce.
The County Court of Douglas
County, Oregon, has secured a large
amount of strychnine and the other
ingredients necessary for the mix
ture, and n quantity thereof has been
mixed and Is now on sale to the
farmers or persons interested at ac
tual cost and may be had by apply
ing to the undersigned at his office
In the Federal building or at the
Umpqun Valley Fruit t'nion in Rose
burg, Oregon.
If any person herein designated
shall, within thirty days from the
first publication of this no'lce. fail
to begin In good faith to extermin
ate, eradicate nnd destroy, according
to the method aforesaid, or by any
other effect Ive means said ground
squirrels herein designated, the
County Court of Douglas County,
Oregon, will nppoinl a person or per
sons to proceed with the extermina
tion and eradication of such ground
squlrrt'Is, and the cost thereof In
curred will be nss4 ssi'd to sueh land,
building, wharf or dock, and unless
paid will become a pln against the
same, for the extermination of said
ground squirrels.
This notice Is published pursuant
to the statute In such case made
and provided nd for two consecu
tive weeks or three issues, and all
persons described therein nre re
quired to take notice thereof.
