The Portland papers have been persistently boosting Colonel John L. May, evidently with a view to plac ing him in Hue for political prefer ment. The mothers of the hoys who served with him overseas take an entirely different view of the mat ter, however. A number of Port land mothers have now openly made Known their decided disapproval of the way their boys under his coin mand were treated. Kepardtng this the Portland Oregonian of April 2 has tiie following: , Troubles of the old Third Oregon was given a public airing yesterday arternoon by 17 mothers represent ing the auxiliaries of companies U C. D. F, G and machine gun, who met to protest against the elevation of Colonel John L. May to a hriga dier-generalship. and to demand that the returning men who have seen service abroad be given commissions in the Third Oregon In the place of civilians who stayed at home. Mrs. J. M. Stevens, mother of Lieutenant Orville Stevens, who was killed in France, presided at the meeting. Mrs. M. K. Daniel, Mrs. A Sorenson and Mrs. C. P. Clerin acted as spokesmen and presented a list of questions concerning Colonel May's relations toward the men, to which they demand a public answer. When shown the questions last evening. Colonel May declined to make a reply. His friends were of the opinion that a number of the questions related to matters wholly outside of Colonel May's jurisdic tion. The women alleged that Colonel May discriminated against men who merited promotion in order that his own sons. Frank May and F.ugene May, might receive advancement. Statements of mistreat men t of the men while in France were made b the women, which, they say, will be backed up by every man in the regi ment. "They have repeatedly said that they were finished with the Third Oregon if Colonel May was to ho retained." The women registered a decided dislike for a new Third Oregon and seem'-fl of the opinion that there was little necessity for the formation of a new organization. They exhibited a petition signed by Colonel W. C. Norih, recently reassigned to com mand of the new regiment, wherein National Guard officers appointed in the absence of the regiment pledged to resign after the return of the 1 6 2d Infantry from France. The women voted to present nhe questions to Colonel .Yay through the press with the request that they be answered publicly. The ques tions submitted by the mothers are a 5 follows: "Why were the boys not allowed to celebrate on the day the armistice was siened and why were they ti t nit thi whs no time for celebration and (riven orders to drill?
