Wilson presiding, met today to con
sider amendments to the covenant
which were proposed during the last
two days hy delegates from the neu
iral countries, it was authoriiutiv e

treaty with the leap we of nations
covenant included. Separate act ion
on the treaty and the league of na
tions plan, as some Republican Sena
tors have proposed, is thus rendered

against Klmer Pierce, of Cleveland,
charged with the unlawtul killing ul
an eik, winch came up lor trial be
fore Judge 1. Li. liiddie in the jus
t ice court this morning, after fif
teen minutes deliberation brought in
a verdict of not guilty. Lack of e i
dence prompted the speedy acquit
tal. Mr. Pierce, so Came Warden Har
rington, the prosecuting witness, al
leges, did on January 21 unlawlully
slaughter an elk near his Cleveland
home. The accused was subsequent
ly arrested and released on $5 oil
bail, which was readily furnished. At
the trial this morning many wit
nesses were Interrogated but little
evidence of a damaging character
was found. Attorney K. 11. Her
mann appeared on behalf of the de
fendant, while District Attorney Geo.
'Xeuner represented the state, Mr.
! Pierce was recently convicted in the
I justice court iiere tor killing a deer
lout of season and was fined in the
i sum of $ 25. The indubitable evi
dence said lo have been secured by
the game warden against the accused

tive plans for necuring a cannery
here, today recommended to the as
semblage of prominent farmers and
citizens who hud gathered at the cny
hall, lhat a local corporation be
formed for tho purpose of establish
ing a canning industry plant lu this
city to take care of the fruit and
vegetable products of Douglas
County. In tho opinion of the com
mittee the association ought to be
incorporated for $20,000, par value
shares at $50 each. The committee
further recommended that at least
r 1 per cent of the stock be held by
actual producers of Douglas County.
Tint plans recommended were unani
mously adopted by the assemblage.
A committee of five citizens were
appointed today to draw up articles
ol incorporation and to receive sub
script ions for the capital stock,
which Is to he disposed of at par.

man of wide experience in operating
cannery establishments, stated at tho
meel ing I his afternoon that the Eu
gene growers' association was formed

present time the capital stock of the
association Is $100,000, or which
$72,ooo is actually paid up. The vol
ume or business handled by the com
pany the past year amounted to ap

the handling of thousands of pounds
of given fruit from the growers,
i hree canneries, located at Lugene,
(unction City and Creswell, have
I n established and are now In
operation managed by the Kugene
l-'rnit ti rowers' Association, and, too,
the Lane County growers own tho
largest prune packing plant in the
l'nited Slates and Ihey operate their
own box factory and spray plant.
The meeting w ii s largely attended
and ihe spirit seemed practically
unanimous in favor of establishing a
'iinniieiy here without further de
lay. They were still in session late
this afternoon.
