A DUSTY courier slid off his motor-cycle at the big double hut
in a French town and tramped up to the canteen.
"Got a note for the secretary from my commanding officer,"
he said. He handed a piece of paper across the counter to a smiling
middle-aged man.
This is the note the Secretary read:
We landed here three days ago miles from anywhere.
Can you send us some supplies, especially" writing
paper? This is the first chance the boys have had
to write home and we have no paper to give them,
The older man looked up and grinned.
"Got you away off in the woods, have they?"
"I'll say they have!"
"Can you carry anything?"
"All you'll give mel"
From the shelves the secretary took big packages of paper and
envelopes.
"Too much?" He asked.
"It will be gone ten minutes after I get back!" said the boy.
"Tonight," the secretary went on, 'Til drive out a truck
with more supplies and a man to stay with you. And tell the boys
that if their letters are finished, I'll bring them back with me tonight,
and get them into the mails."
An hour later that motor-cyclist whizzed into camp, loaded
down with writing paper, and in ten minutes letters were being
written to 200 American homes.

Congressman V, C. Hawley has ac
cepted the invtation of the students
of the old Tmpijua Academy to de
liver the annual address to their
association on June 1. Mr. Hawley
was formerly a teacher at the old
l:iiip(ua Academy and his address
will make the session next year of

speakers of prominence will also

uute nurses available, six under
graduate nurses, those who have had
six months of experience, 1! who
have had experience as practical
nurses, six midwives, 1 ti who have
had the Ued Cross course training,
and one trained attendant, making
a total of 42 women In the city who
could perform nursing service.
The nursing survey was done on
Monday hut . not completed until
Tuesday. Incidental with this sur
vey a survey of the influenza situa
tion was taken and information ob
lained which proved very opportune
to hit the need ol the report of the
executive commit tee of the Ked
Cross. Inquiries were made at
every home concerning the prevail
ing malady and all cases of influ
enza. pneumonia or severe grippe
cases were groupel under the disease
for which the city has been quaran
tined. No canes at all were reported In
Kdenhower, hut in every other sec
tion u fe wcases were found. The
heaviest cases were found to be in
the south part of the city on Pine,
Stephens and Jackson streets. On
North Jackson street the disease had
veen heavy on the west side of the
street but had hardiv touched tbe
opposite side. In West floseburg
there had been a large number oi
cases, but that s c: ion is" at present
nearly free of the disease.
It was found for the entire city
that 20 new cases have been report
ed this week. The other figures
show 241 convalescent or practically
recovered. 55 111, with about six seri
ous cases, and 20 new cases.
