'I he exhibit in cludes a variety of highly finished articles manufactured Ironi myrtle wood by Kehfield'M. manufacturer of myrtle wood novelties, at Marh tbdd. The wood in characteristic for its many different grains and col ors and is one of Hie most handsome woods Tor furniture and cabinet making that is known. lis scientific name is I'mbelluria Calit'oruica. It is an evergreen Ire, growing from i;o to mi feet in height and from 2 to 4 feet in diameter. In shape Hie trees generally grow in the form of a large bee hive but at times have a straight trunk lor 2o to :iu feet , with a dense rounded crown of close upright branches. The lea v es a re occa s j o n a 1 1 y dried and used in t te place of bay leaves in cooking hut lens should he used as they are stronger. It is a long lived tree, as trees of 1T i lichen in diameter are from 2aU to ?,ht years of age. It ranges from the I'mpoua Itiver in Oregon, to Southern Hum boldt County, California, known and found no where else in the world. The linesl groves are found in Coos and Curry counties, Oregon. Only a small portion of trees cut yield the beautiful mottled and veined variety, same being a hard wood and very tough. A few years ago, he said, the hogs from the Willamette Valley were coming to market and taking a place below the product coming from East ern Oregon. Merely by better breeding, improved care and feed ing, and an eiforl lo produce what the markets are aft it, the valley lings are now commanding the top prices and the growers are reaping a corresponding reward. It should never be overlooked that it costs less to linish a pure bred hog lor market than it does a scrub, and that the pure bred will bring a cent or more per pound better price in the mar ket, besides providing a sale at fancy prices of individual animals for breeding purposes. Also that the picking was much easier when the berries were fully ripened. Crowers who expect to take up this industry must determine for themselves for which purpose they will grow ber ries and make i heir cont t acts ac cordingly. In order to get a logan berry juice factory established at lio.seburg at least ISno acres to be planted for this purpose must be contracted in advance. If part oi the growers contract to the juice plant and part for dehydiating, the acreage must be correspondingly in creased, to produce required number or berries.
