Commissioner Adams voted aeainst the motion, saving he w at op posed to the measure, but Inas much as it had been deciced to buy the plant he would do all he could to make a success of its operation He filed for record a lengthy Htate ment of his reasons, based on the belief that it would be more expen sive for the Mate to do the work than let It out by contract to respon- ible contractors. He said he favored leasing a plant oefore buying. The plant selected was a second hand one belonging to the Oregon Independent Paving Company, and the price to be paid is JlS.-Sii", con ditioned on the promise that it is to be put in firs class order. The orig inal amount asked was $15. unit. The plant is mounted on a railway car ind weighs 90 tons, with a capacity of 20WU yards per day. In addition the commission pur chased two 10-ton rollers at a cost of $".ioo and a five ton tandem roll er tor $1Kio. Out of its idle road equipment the commission decided to lend an en gine, two miles of track and 10 cars to the Hammond Uuinber Company, which is getting out airplane spruce for the (iovernment. The monthly rental was fixed at approximately $f0, or about half the cost to the state. To overcome the railway embargo on cars for shipping road material, the commission decided to purchase its own equipment for the transpor tation of material for paving next season. Subject to approval 19 cars formerly used in the Government reclamation service, are to be bought at a cost of $2K.ooo. In answer to a request from Kane t ounty, the state highway engineer was instruct I'd to make a recog nizance survey of the high pass and Smithfield routes lor the Kugene- Florence road. In outlining its pav ing plans for next year, tho commis sion made the following allotment of paving: Marion County, 1 a mil between Aurora and Salem: l.lnn County, eight miles between Albany and Jefferson ; Lane and hen ton counties, eight miles between Mon roe and Junction.
