He said, in part: In view of the fact that articles have appeared in the newspapers of Portland drawing attention to the cheaper prices of staple foods pre vailing in England and other war ridden countries than In ihe I'nited States and giving the conclusion (hat Americans are being exploited, 1 would like to clear up the matter. "In England the staple foods have been taken under government con trol in order that the people may have food at reasonable prices. For instance, if wheat is bought from America at $ I u a bushel, hy the time this is ready for sale in England it has cost the go eminent approxi mately $11. which amount would cover transportation expenses. The bakeries are under government control and are run to a large ex tent without profit.
