These women attend moro- ini5 chapel, evening prayers, class meeting. Thursday prayer meeiitiK, besides Sunday sfhool and rhutcb, so i hey are all the time under Christian teaching. At the end of the year t hose who are really capable stu denttt and seem qualified to be train inK as workei h are taken into the training school, which has a four years' and another a six years' course for Hible-women. while those too youiiK for thai work are trained to teach in the primary schools. We hav 23 !n the training whool this term and two who ate studying at home because new babies inter fered with their coming intorhool lor the tune, but they plan to come in fr Kxhiiih. This work is don' in Chinese eharacters, though they keep up their knowledge of Romanized In some of Dm Itihle work and a news paper published ill Koochow. The women take turna in leading even ing prayers, and ou Thursday after noons the head class go down town to bring women out to our special 'vangelist ic meet ing. I often take t he Yictrola to that meet ing and ive the women a treat. 'Tis a won derful Ihing to them and M has been -iiich a satisfaction to us all. I even take it out in the country sometimes ind it means as much to the illape ! women as a circus does to an Ameri can boy. On Saturday afternoon, the ibbr women do ho use-to house vis ting, telling the Cos pel story lo hose who are kept at home. .Most of our teaehing is done by "hlnese. fur the missionary has too much supervising of all the work, to tejich many hours. This term I have 'iad lour regular classes besides giv ng .-peeial help to two of our teach rs. We have two hiirh school grad uates, a first degree literary man, it-sides the IComaiiied leacher. We have a matron who is more like a house mother; she sees that the house work is well done by the stu dents, plans Die meals, keeps the lit 'Ic det;uls In band, which is a won derful help, for one must live in the school in order lo do that and a 'hinese woman can (to it much hel ler than we. This woman has been nation for years and is very compe tent. We have an '"uncle" to do our uarket f ng. shopping for the w omen ind carry water This term our sick ire being looked after by the nurse from Die girls school. She is a tormer graduate of Die training school, liiught for awhile, then took uur m-'n (laming in the Magaw hns nital in l-'oochow. She is such a help, rehiring me entirely from going the rounds and giving medicines; of ourse for serious cases we rail the loctor and ollen send lo the daih linfe those who are able to go. The teach Die women the Christian doctrine and prepare tbem for baptism, for they mast first un derstand with their mind before thoy can believe with their heart. Besides tnese things the Bible-woman must be all things at all tirrfes to all peo ple if he would win tbern to this new religion she teaches. Often she is in a village where there la no resi dent preacher and on Sunday she conducts the worship. We usually ! have a Bible-woman In each village where there is a day school, so she : L.nd the teacher may be of mutual help; often they live together in the sa me building that housea the school. And now you will want to know what kind of school housea we have out in the villages We don't have any; we expect the people, to furnish a room in orie of their houses Chinese houses are built to shelter the clan or family with all of Its branches, so It isn't hard to find a ! vacant room, but seldom easy to find a real suitable one. GEORGE SCHUMAKfR, FOR MER 10CAI CHEMIST, HAS SMALL DRUG INDUSTRY That Ceorge Schumaker, formerly of this city, but for the past year of Sumner. Coos County, has estab lished quite an Industry for the handling of drug supplies, and has attained considerable success, was the report received lieie loday. Mr. Schumaker now has a drier and a distilling plant, and during the summer had a crew of several work men. A circular has also been received here listing the number of plants which may be grown or gathered in any part of the state and for which Mr. Sch u maker says he will pay a good price. Most of the plants are ordinary wild herbs, having roots, seed or leaven that are useful In the manufacture of drug products. Mr. Schumaker is an experienced and ex pert chemist, and attracted much at tention through his work in this line while a resident here. It is said that he has manufactured practically all the digitalis output of the tate and has attracted attention in the Kast because of its excellent quality. Most of tli is drug formerly came from Ku rope. It is used in surgery as a heart stimulant. Mr. Schumaker Is said to have had orders for $:in,Ouo worth of his drugs, hut was unable to handle his products in such large quant it ies. Iuring the Hummer months he was anxious to handle dandelion roots, rose leaves, Oregon grape roots, fen nel and other herbs. He effered as much as 12 cents a pound. Mr. Schumaker lived in Koseburg while here and left following the de struction of his home by fire. He was also subjected to an investiga tion in this city for being tin em ploye of the German government. The charge was later dropped.
