W. aetivltleH throughout the Northwest, as well as elsewhere, was backed by the influence of Ger man money. More evidence to that effect has been brought to light since the indictment of about Hit; 1. W. W leaders In Chicago u week ago. The ;:: officials attach no little signif icanc to the fact that a number of those indicted were found in the various! army cantonments. All of those men j are said to have gone Into service ! without claiming exemption. One of the charges made in the indictment 1 is "the discovery of certain efforts of the Industrial Workers of the World ' to create among the registered men a feeling of disloyalty and Insubor dination." Some of the evidence used by the Federal gram) jury in obtaining true bills given out by the Federal au- thorities shows that it was contained principally in letters and pamphlets, thousands of which were distributed over the country. , A letter from James llowan, sent' from Seattle. Wash., under dale of August ' to William Haywood says: "We have the good will of the lierman people here and we feel that they are in sympathy with our cause. We do not call them Cermans, how ever, hut refer to them the same as others of the fellow workers. "We are going to carry our points if we have to stop every industry on the Pacific Coast. We did not de clare war and we have not consented to the workingman giving up his lib erty and being drafted " Haywood and others are held lia ble for publication In the newspaper Solidarity last August of the foMov ing : "The Industrial Workers of the World is more than a labor organiza tion. Anderson, who is in charge of the operations, and states that a new tunnel has led to the late dis cov ery. t A tunnel underneath the old shafts has been in course of deepening- for some time, said Mr. Per rine this morning. The men have now probably gotten into the deep er strata under the old workings, he said, with the result that a much higher grade of ore has been opened up, than was anticipated at the time t he new tu tin d was started. M r. Perrine ami Mr. Marsters will prob ably leave for the mine in a few days, when they will make a person al investigation of the new work ings. Siare two-thirds of the fires in the state of Oregon are in residential sectionj, the question of women ana fire pievention is of utmost import ance. No one would thmk of putting hot fhes in a wooden barrel, yet fires do start In a great measure from wooden ash barrels. " A metal re ceptacle is cheap and fireproof. We know women .who keep their kitchens so clean that you could eat off the floor; but fill the little kit-, chen cupboard with oily rags and an o'cedar mop. Fully fifteen per cent of the fires start from spon taneous combustion in these illy ventilated kitchen cupboards. In the garrets and basements of many homes In Oregon is a collec 1 lion of junk that couldn't be sold for, a dollar a load. Rubbish breeds di.- J ease and begets fire. j Gasoline may be convenient to clean waists, gioves and other wear-j Ing apparel, but lust year in the city of Portland it reunited in the deaP.i ; nt three women and the resultant effect of leaving three families motherless. Coal oil is sometimes convenient to start fires, but it is usually cost ly. Coal oil used for starting kit chen fires last year in Oregon re sulted in the loss to an excess of one hundred thousand dollars. It may be convenient to keep, matches on the side of the stove, but remember that this is also in reach S. of the children.
