Several buyers have been acoutiiiK
about the county during the past
few weeks and a number of the
growers have been otTereTi as much
as eifcht cents a pound for their pro
duct. In only a lew Instances, how
eer, hae contracts been executed
on that basis. Most of the growers
anticipate higher prices and are not
inclined to sell their product at this
time. This Is especially .true of the
larger growers in the prosperous
prune districts south of Itosebnrp.
While the export trade has fallen
off during Ihe past three years, the
home demand for prunes is said to
be greater than ever before. The
armies of the allied countries are al
so using many prunes, ami this adds
materially to the total sales.

here at this tiuie in order to be pres
ent ut the annual meeting of the
lire patrolmen which will be held
in Koseburg next Saturday.
A crew of men are now engaged
in constructing a new telephone line
Horn Camas Valley to what is known
as Middle Creek. This is a distance
of approximately 17 miles, and thv
line has been comuleted with the ex
ception of a few hundred yards.
Uuring his recent absence from the
clly, .Mr. Lander also directed the
construction of a trail from Cow
Creek to Middle Creek, which in a
distance of about four miles. Still
another I rail was built over Llv
Oak Mountain. This mountain is
covered with a heavy growth of tim
ber and the construction of the trail
was no small task.
Mr. Lander sas he has about 20
men at work in different parts of:
the county at the present time and
a number of additional men will be!
sent out next Monday. It is hi In
tention to complete most of the con-
st ruction work by August 1, w hen
the men will be used for patroling
the forests against fires.
