Much Inquiry is being received from variouK parts of Hie country concerning the O. C. grant lands about to be opened to public entry In thlH county. Uouglas County has ho tut made no definite survey of the churacter of these lands and their probable value to homestead ers; hence, Intelligent answers to the queries ure difficult lo make. Many persons have the Impression that the lands so reverting to the United Slates in this county would bo wvih much more to the people concerned locally if they bad remained the tax able property of the railroad com pany. The general character of the lands scarcely warrants the opinion that any possible improvement by agriculture will give tiieiu sufficient value to make up in taxes to the county the loss sustained by their reversion to the public domain, thus becoming unassessable bT the coun ty for the benelit or the county. However, It should not be taken for framed that there are no cul tivable lands in that great area. It has been demonstrated in this coun ty that some of the most productive soils we have are those of a residual nature in the foothills about the val ley and in the vales and glades in the higher altitudes of the surround ing hills. Much of the land that is timbered in many parts of the olo grant is worthless for agriculture, taking the area as a whole; and again not a small area of excellent land may be found in small lots in that same territory. The latter lan would be valuable to the farmer whi combines the liveslock industry wirb his farm operations, each being con ducted on a small scale, compara tlvely. Just as farming alone is dont in the valley. In many instances. It is this latter feature of tin grant land proposition, when thi lands are thrown oten to settlement, that will appeal to hundreds ol small operators in mixed farming. In that way, each individual claim ant will obtain, in many cases, val liable commercial timber along with his agricultural land. This can 7i time be disposed of In various farms. Saw timber and fuel timber are both valuable in this county In proportion to their accessibility. Therefore, the answer lo those in quiries should not be too readily given that the O. It was later voted by the pupils to turn the money over to the lied CroH and thereby assist in re lieving suffering huma-nity. Ir. Seely said thin was one of the most welcome contributions that had been received by the Ited Cross committees, and showed conclusivel that the people of the Ash vicinity ure loyal to their country. It is almost impossible for .he grower to expect to sell his beans n any old sack, if he can get new men. A few cents extra for a new jag will probably mean to him a dol ar or two additional profit. It is lil'ficult for a jobber to convince a 3uyer that the beans have been graded and polished if they ure diipped in an old sack.
