Agitation for the immediate liberalization of Ger many is growinK daily. The news papers of slrotiuly conservative ten dencies are urging reforms. A num ber of leaders heretofore reaction ary, are apparently in favor of great er reforms. Such newspapers as the Vorwaerts, Tageblatt and Vosslsehe are leading the way. The celebrated historian. Professor Otto Hunt, said in a statement: "We Prussians can not stand alone In the midst of Ger many, of Europe, nor of the whole world is resisting liberalization. In order to relieve the congestion -in the North Itoseburg telephone ser vice and to replace the overcrowded poles extending from the local ex change to the Kdennower district, a crew of linemen and calisumen will probably start to work on the in stallation of over ynoo feet uf the latest iinproed cable in Ihe next lew days. The cable, which was contained on four big reels, was received at the local on ice this morning and wub placed ready for handling, alter sev eral weeks of delay and consequent postponement of the project. It was also learned that the telephone poles which have been piled on the com pany's properly for the past several months, w ill be used in connect ion with ihe same work. Many old poles will be removed and the new ones will he put In their places. The cable consists of 6150 ft-t of 25 pair nihil, 215(1 feet of 5u pair cable, and !ttO feet uf tun pair cable. Kach pair of wires represents the accom modation of one phone. According to the management to day, the improvement will be begun probably before ihe hist of the week. Several extra men will be hero from outside points and the work will be rushed as fast as possible, although it will require at least several weeks to complete. The present lines are said to have taxed the old poles lo the limit, and a new cable, sufffclerrt to relieve the congestion as well as I (be line of poles, is defined almost a ' necessity. Probably the most important busi ness transacted at the regular ses sion of the Itoseburg school board. held at the offices uf Koscoe Green last night, was that of rescinding a pretended election held here some time ago, when F. H. Hamlin was named as superintendent uf the local schools for the ensuing year. The resolution to rescind the pro tended election was Introduced by It. L. Stephens and received the sup port uf three members of Ihe board. J. A. Buchanan and .1. (. Newland were unalde lo be present at the meeting and did not vote on the resolution. The resolution as Introduced by M r. Stephena and adopted hy t he school board, follows: Whereas, un the 2tlth day of March, UU7, a vote was taken on a motion to re-elect K. H. Hamlin as superintendent of schools for the year commencing June 1 st, 1 !i 1 7. upon which vole three diri ctoi s oted in the affirmative and two di rectors did not concur therein, and a protest was made hy one of the di rectors on the ground that said K. M. llamtin is related hy marriage within the third degree to one of t he members uf the school hoard ; and. Whet eas, no conl ract has been made or entered Into with the said y. H. Hamlin and the board of di rectors does not desire to renew his ompluymeiiL his contract having ex pired; And It further appearing that said attempted election wan null and void, It Is t hen 'ft ire now resolved by the hoard of directors of pchool dis trict No. 4 that t he attempted re election of F. Clifford Jope and Joo Deuu will be called into ter vice just as soon as the proper equip ment reaches Portland, was the pro diction of the former young man fol lowing his return here last night from Portland, where he spent the past few daye with friends. The young men enlisted In the medical department some time ago. and It was originally thought they would he sent to Fort Klley, Kan.. with Dr. Geo. K. Houck. The delay In catling tt hoys is said to he due to a lack of equipment. Mr. Kiddle made the trip to Port land In his "hug" autumohile and reports the roads in fine condition, lie stopped at Corvallls en route to Portland. where he has many friends. The young men are anx iously awaiting their orders to move, and it is possible they will be re ceived hy the first of July.
