completed It will probably be one of
the most unique Hummer resorts in
Oregon. Mr. Winters in an ardent
sportsman and a famous large game
hunter. Mrs. Winters spends near
lv every Hummer in the mountains or
at the coast, and Is also (iii)o a noted
angler. They 'will probably not t
turn to Portland before the last of
September.

BEN NICHOLS INJURED
NEAR TILLER MONDAY;
MACHINE WAS WRICKED

this afternoon to the effect that the
automobile stuue operated by li. F.
Nichols, between Kiddle and Tiller,
overturned near the latter place on
Monday aud was badly damaged. Mr.
Nichols was thrown from the car and
sustained a number of painful,
bruises.
AMhcutih accurate Information re
garding the accident was not avail
able this afternoon. County Judge
Markers said it was his understand
ing that tho accident occurred near
the summit of a very heavy grade.;
.Mr. Nichols "killed" his engine,
whereupon the machine started to
hack down the grade. Tho machine
was later backed into the abutting
embankment, and after climbing the,
same for a short distance, overturn
ed. The injuries sustained by Mr.
Nichols were not of a serious nu-j

A real torpedo, like those used in
Ihe navy, will be on exhibition here
tomorrow. The projectile will prob
ably be placed in front of the Ma

ROADS COMPARE WELL
WITH OTHER COUNTIES
Aflcr a trip which took hint over
practicably all of the main roads of
the slate. It. K. Smith, editor of the
Tax Liberator, returned here yester
day. He was summoned to Portland
and later sent to Kastei n Oregon and
other sections of the state to aid in
the I ted Cross work.
Speaking of the roads today. Mr.
Smith said the worst pieces of high
way he encountered on the trip was
between the terminal of the paved
portion of the Columbia River High
way and Cascade Locks. Another
bad piece of road extends from Cot
taee Grove to the Douglas County
line. Although the road through
Pass Creek Canyon Is a trifle rough
in spots. Mr. Smith says the high
ways In Douglas County compare
well with those found in other parts
of the state.
Mr. Smith made the entire trip by
automobile and covered several hun
dred miles.
