desire good roads. This means that within a couple of years this
highway will he forever removed from the category of being "the
worst road in the United States." It means that within a very
lew years we shall have a paved highway from the north to the
south line of the county and beyond. It means that our local road
funds can then be applied wholly on our lateral roads, as the state
will maintain this 107 miles of through road. Incidentally it
means that over .$1,000,00(1 of outside money will be spent on
roads in this county, while we will be applying an almost equal
sum of our own funds on our own roads. With lf'J,00(),000 prop
erly applied on our roads in the next two or three years we may tit
last realize that the day is at hand when we are to be freed from
the enormous handicap and mud tax from which we have long
been suffering.
Now let the very best possible selections be made in choosing
the three men under whose supervision our county bonding fund
is to be applied. Keep this road work in all its phases entirely
free from politics. The county is being bonded to the limit. Kvery
dollar must bring a dollar's worth of results. We are to have the
aid of the state, both in the paving and in the use of convict labor
on the grades. Now for good, permanent roads. I

A number of people have failed to grasp the idea that a
sons wno are qunmien. 10 vole ai couniy and stale elections are
entitled to vote at the annual school election next Monday. The
law was amended to that ellect by the last Legislature, (inly tax
payers can vote at a bonding election, but all persons over "Jl
years of age who have resided within the district for :i(l days next
preceding the election may vote for school directors. Do not be
come confused regarding this mailer, but come out and vole next
Monday and tell your neighbors to do likewise. Also remember
that there are two directors to be elected al this time. The candi
dates in opposition to the present regime are Dr. K. L. Miller and
A. J. Ceddes. Loth of them must lie elected in older to change
the present conditions. The election of either one of (hem without
the other would leave the school board in the same status as at
present with the Hamlin supporters in control. Apparently
taking that view, it is said that the Hamlin element is making a
concentrated ell'ort for the re-elction of S. L. Lilian! as director.
It is even reported that they are "single-shooting" the proposition
telling people to vote for only one candidate for director--in a
desperate endeavor to "put him over." Their maiti argument is
said to be the claim that unless Dillard is re-elected that the dis
trict will lose money on account of the pending settlement with
the contractor lohn Hunter for the new high school building.
Of course they do not go into details regarding thai matter. If
they refer to "extras" cm the building, aside from the formal con
tract, the facts are that every one of these extras is a matter of
record in the hands of the school clerk by order of the board.
They are said to total but a few hundred dollars anil are already
nearly all paid for. If Mr. Dillard has authorized the contractor
to do anything that is not of record with the school clerk, thai in
itself should be a sullicient reason for his retirement from the
board. We are informed thai Dillard favored retaining the archi
tect, alter his lime of contract on the new building had expired at
an expense to the school district of about iflso per month iit
that this was prevented by other members of the board That
was something like six months ago. -Not much economy in that
sort ol movement on Ins part to continue a needless payroll during I
all that time. Neither is there any foundation for the claim tint I
Dillard must be continued on the honid in order to Vv a proper I
settlement with the contractor- .lohn Hunter. Such a claim would I
be likely to arouse suspicion -in some minds at least -that there'
might be some sort of understanding or collusion between Dillard
and Hunter. It is also a direct slap at the capability and business 1
judgment and by inference the honesty- f the other members1
ol the school board. Voters .should not be misled by any such I
tactics, nor by any of the many reports that may be put into cm u
at ion regarding Mr. Coddes or Dr. Miller. The real purpose of
