wua taught in the old Koseburg
Academy until it collapsed, then in
the old Odd Fellows hall in the
same block, some of the departments
being accommodated in the Masonic
ball and the M. E. Church, South,
then in the two story building which
was christened the Lane school. AW
of these buildings in their turn have
disappeared to give place to the
present magnificent high school edi
fice. Near the close of the session In
ISItO, President U. L. Arnold, of the
Oregon Agricultural College, devoted
an entire week to a visit of the Hose
burg HChool, and at the close of the
last session President Arnold offered
a position iu the U. A. C. to l'rofessoi
llorner as soon as the regents could
provide it for him. Soon the oppor
tunity came, since which time Pro
fessor Horner has remained in the
college, where he is Professor of His
tory. In speaking of the Oregon Agricul
tural College, Professor Horner sain
that "under the supervision of a
great man as president and a large
faculty of specialists, aided with
some of the finest laboratories on
the continent, the enrollment of the
college has grown to almost four
thousand students; and it is the aim,
if possible, to open the school in Oc
tober with three thousand.
"Recently the War Department,
through General Dell, issued instruc
tion to young men that unless they
were called to military service, they
could serve their country best by
preparing themselves in some tech
nical military school where they can
learn the art of defense and the
preservation of their homes. Under
the present plan, the land grant col
lfges which afford industrial and
military instruction w ill secure an
increasingly large patronage as the
present war progresses. President
Kerr predicts also that during the
reconstruction period to follow the
war there will be unusual demand
for men trained in different lines of
applied science. Therefore, all in
all considered, the education of
young men and women for the con
ditions that confront our country
will he strongly emphasized by the
Federal Government, the state, and
the people at large.
In this connection mention was
made of the large attendance at the
Oregon Agricultural College from
Douglas County through all the
years, as well ob the success and
high standing of the graduates. Of
the graduates from Douglas County,
Professor Horner recalls Pert Pilk-
lngton, who came from Oakland, but
1b now employed in the college ex
periment station; Lulu Thornton-

PLANS fOR NEW DAM
ARE BEING PREPARED

here la nixht from the site of the
North Umpqua fish hatchery, where
tney passed the day making a water
survey of the river there preparatory
to the construction of a dum during
the present summer.
Mr. Micks stated this morning that
the proposed dam would he approxi
matelv 2 Ml feet in length, and 18
feet high in the center. It will be
of cement or timber construction
and will be equipped with a modern
fishway. As soon as Mr. Hicks ran
prepare the plans for the dam they
will be sent lo the Fish anil (lame
Commission for approval. If satis
factory to the commission, actual
work on the dam will probably begin
earlv In July.
Other improvements contemplated
it the hatchery include the installa
tion of several new ponds and the
addition of facilities which will make
it possible, to propagate trout as well
is salmon. The money with which
to make the proposed improvements
at the hatchery was appropriated at
the last session of the State Legisla
ture, and is now available for act
ual work.

Mr. Daird. who came over on last
Friday's stage for a brief stay on
Smith River, has returned home.
Klection day is over, and -Mr.
Woolley, as deputy sherirf, was sent
to lioseburg wilh the ballot boxes,
returning Friday.
Mr. Ilaccus, who has been away
for the past year at work, returned
home Friday. He is planning on
making some improvements on the
ranch this summer.
Quite a number of campers were

them being Messrs. Albert Traylor,
Mell Mattoon, Charley McClure, Joe
Krewson, all of Iirain, nnd .Messrs.

Miss Daragar, wlio had spent the
past week at Koseburg, returned to
her school duties Tuesday in the
Gunter district. Her sister, Miss
Greta, returned with her for a brief
visit.
Mrs. Ina Gunter receceived word
that her grandchild at Anlauf is
iUite ill with tho measles, and she
left on Wednesday's stage to help
care for it.
Itoad work was resumed this week
with a small force of men. The
work Is being mostly done at the
upper end of Smith River this week.
The roads are in good condition now
for using a scraper on them, before
they get too dry.
Mrs. Traylor, who is at present liv
ing at Tirain, expects to come over to
Smith River soon for a brief visit
wilh relatives and friends.

Men With Money Will He Aked to
Contribute Liberally, According;
to 1 Ac Plans Outlined by
the Commit tct.
Beginning June 18th, a campaign
will be inaugurated In all the cities
and towns of the Cuited States to
raise one hundred million dollars so
the Ked Cross can extend its activi
ties to cover the great needs of our
army and navy, and our allies. The
time has come for action, the wake
up call has been Bounded, and every
patriotic person in this land of the
free must heed the call. We might
as well try to dam up a flood with
sand, as to try to meet the Herman
peril in a careless, "let George do
it" way. The word "slacker" must
be unknown in Douglas County. We
have got to build a wall or granite,
or prepare to suffer what Belgium,
Northern France, Poland, Serbia anil
Koumaiila have suffered. The first
masonry In that defense wall should
be t aside from questions of military
service , assistance to the Ked Cross.
No excuses, no procrastinations will
do. This is no time for a person to
say, "Well, so many calls have been
made on my pocket book that I don't
feel as if I could afford to give to the
Ited Cross." Such talk sounds like
childish babble in a great crisis, such
as this country now faces. We have
profited financially from the sacri
fices and sufferings of our brave al
lies during the past three years. We
have become the market place of the
world. The war has sent great
riches, great prosperity to our coun

worth. All of the funds raised dur-
ing the time of the war for Red
Cross will be expended under the di-
rect supervision of these splendid
